My sailing season is ending on a small lake in north western Pa. The marina I'm at is offering winter outside storage with the mast up. Is it a good idea to kept the wind vane and wind speed indicator on the mast thru the winter. Any ideas for or against.

I have done the mast up with vane with no issues. The thing is that with the mast up on the hard the wind can put some stress on the rig. When the boat is in the water the boat rocks with the wind creating less stress on rig. My thought going forward is to drop the mast and give the rig a rest. With my 222 it is not that big a deal. My 2 pennies.

Funny thing, up in Maine most pull the mast, here in Maryland most leave them up. Recent estimates I have gotten just to pull the mast off oneway have ranged from 700 to 1300. I guess in Maine the rates must be a lot lower for people to do it every season.

I don't mean to rub it in but for me it is $150 to pull the mast and $100 to step it in the spring. Easy without the stick to cover her up for the winter sleep. Shrink wrap is $450 so much cheaper to pull the mast and use a tarp year after year.

Mmmmm, might be cost effective to have her shipped there.

It would be great to have you here. Plenty of harbors to explore and half are Canadian. Thousand Islands and bays are plentiful for those who anchor out. $900 for the 24' dock April 15 to Oct 15 and $1000 for a 27' dock. $723.72 for the mast step and storage for the winter. Couple that with fresh water which solves a lot of corrosion issues and it is a paradise in it's own right. The down side is the brutal winters. When ya coming up?

As soon as I can get a corporate jet to keep the commute to two hours.
Sounds wonderful. The Thousand Islands are on our bucket list. Just got a book about the classic wood power boats there and the scenery is gorgeous.
Just to make you feel good, our summer dock is 4500 and I understand it would be twice that around Annapolis.
