On or Off

When I leave my boat for the weekend, I turn off the refrigeration and open the freezer and refrigerator in the belief that by doing so, I'm preventing mildew from forming. Am I right? Whatever is in the two compartments stays except for the ice which we throw overboard.

Mildew

You will limit the amount of mildew by leaving the box lids open while not in use. If the boat is closed tightly for long periods of time and there is high humidity you can still form mildew.

I turn my refer on in mid April and will turn it off in several weeks when I winterize the boat. I have never had any problems with mildew as long as the box is left turned on. Guess it does not grow in cold temp. Much like the refer at home. My boat is a 91 so it has been running every summer since then with no noticeable wear on the compressor. I would think that it might be harder on the unit to turn on and off every weekend plus it takes so long to cool down the walls of the box. If you did not have a compressor, there would be no question to leave the unit open when you leave but other wise, I would leave it on and enjoy a cold beer every time you get to the boat on Friday night.

Leave it on

I am converted to the leave it on crowd. It is just so nice to have the beer cold in the frig on arrival I can't do without it. No problems encountered and unit seems to run very little vs. the tremendous cool down time if turned off in the summer.

On

I live on my boat, however I am on the road throughout the week. Hence, I am only on the boat on weekends. I have had my refrig/freezer on for well over a year. If you really use it I recommend leaving it on. JR

on or off.... not rocket science

Ok, this subject has come up so many times that I feel I must scream aloud..... LEAVE IT ON. When we leave our homes for vacation, etc. the fridge stays on. There is no differance with your 12VDC boat fridge. In most cases they run cooler than a 110 vac home fridge so will last longer regardless. (forced air cooling vs. static cooling.) Plus, added benefits include: lower run times when initially boarding for the weekend, 2 week cruise, etc., ability to leave condiments and other perishables on board, lower overall current draw, and a frosty brew or cocktail after the long ride to the marina!

We leave ours on year round.

Steve: We leave ours on year round. It is similar to a home refrigerator. You still need to muck it out occasionally. The bottom of the box gets little funky but it is probably worse if you turning it on/off, unless you clean it each time. "Things" don't grow as well in 35-40 deg as they do in 70-90 deg temps. 1. You do need to leave your battery charger on all the time. 2. You also want to be sure that you have a good battery charger. It is less critical that it is a three stage charger if you leave the refrigeration on all the time, because your batterys will probably never be fully charged for any length of time. 3. You do want to leave beer aboard so it's cold when you get there.
