I just acquired what appears to be a very nice condition 1999 Evinrude 10 hp 4-stroke. I want to test it with an infra-red temp gauge before taking it out (because I'm a big chicken). Can any outboard experts tell me the proper operating temperature once the motor has come up to temp and the thermostat opens (or closes, whichever the case may be)?

Thanks in advance!

easy, just

Hold your hand on the metal, and count to 10. If you can't, it's too hot. A temp of 160 0r less should be OK

If it helps...

I just overheated my Honda four stroke outboard and bought an infrared thermometer to check the engine. The Honda shop advised me that the running temp should be about 140 to 160 degrees. Obviously it's not the same engine you have but I bet it's close. Measure all around the engine, you will notice that certain areas are warmer than others.
