I have a problem with my 1984 OMC 9.9 OB with electric Start. I was not able to get the engine to start with the electric start. I was able to pull start the engine and allowed the engine to warm up for 5 minutes or so. Released the lines and put the engine in revearse and started to back out of the slip. Idled down the engine and changed gears to forward and the engine died. Restarted the engine with some difficulity and was idling ok. Placed the engine in forward gear again and the engine died again. I got the boat back in the slip and tried the engine again and idled for 10 minutes and died again when I placed the engine in gear. I was not able to restart the engine again. The engine ran fine in July and the gas tank was filled in May, with Gas stabalizer. Any ideas on where to start looking at trouble shooting would be gratly appreciated. EJ Tews

I had the same type of issues with my 1981 vintage Evinrude 9.9 electric start. It would stall out at low throttle, and was getting increasingly difficult to start. I had the engine professionally tuned every spring, and things were still getting worse, year by year. I would invariably have to spend at least a hundred dollars a year in new parts (new throttle, new prop, new thermostat, etc.) More than once a planned sailing outing had to be cancelled because of engine problems. Finally, the Admiral said "I don't care how well you take care of it, its over twenty years old. How much longer are you going to keep sinking money into that thing? Buy a new one you cheap *&$%#." I bought a Nissan 8 long shaft with electric start before last season, and I can't believe how I went so long not knowing if my engine would start or not. She starts on the first or second pull or with one quick touch of the electric start. I know you were looking for a more technical answer, but sometimes it just ain't worth fixin' no more.

E.J. Had a 9 horse Merc with a similar problem several years ago on a 23 Challenger Clipper. Like you I put lots of bucks into the thing with tune-up parts and carb rebuilds leading the cash parade. Until I got fed up with it and bought a new 9.5 Merc Electric start. THEN I read the manual and it clearly said that gas-o-hol will ruin the fuel delivery system in an outboard like none other. The guy who bought my old engine had it tuned and uses only pure non alcohol fuel and hasn't had a day of trouble out of her to date. Check the station(s) or fuel dock where you get your gas and make sure there is no alcohol in the mix. Good Luck Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron

Thanks for the feedback. I went back and looked at my receipts and it was last winter that I replaced the gas. I am going to pull it and give it a tune up and test the starter before I give up. I have had trouble free service from the engine for the past 3 years. I am also going to change the transfer gear oil and clean it up. If I can spend two hundred and save 2000, it will be money well spent. EJ
