Older Yanmar Engines: 100 hrs for Oil. 300 hrs for Filter.

The well-accepted mantra for oil changes (for cars, boats, suv's, motorcycle's, nuclear submarines, etc) is also put in a new oil filter every time. Not doing so is false economy! What's $7.99 (or whatever) for the cost of a filter compared to the cost of a premature engine rebuild?

I have Yanmar service manuals for both the QM and GM series. Older engines for sure. Both manuals specify oil changes every 100 hrs. And a new oil filter every 300 hrs.

How many of you when changing the oil don't bother with filter except with every other or every third oil change?

I have always heard a new filter and make up oil on the short interval and an oil change on a much longer interval.

My manual says the same and that's what I do, or a year if less. I always change the filter, however. It's a two-bit job easy to do while I'm oiled up anyway. It offends my sensibility to go to that much trouble and reuse a dirty filter. I do follow the guidelines on fuel filters and impellers. I used to change them annually too, but it was a fourth or less of the hours recommended and that seemed a bit over the top.

Oil and filter change once a year - that's less than 100 hrs but it's in the contract at the yard.

100 hrs or once a year both filter and oil. How much more trouble is it to remove the filter?

Oil and filter every 6 months or 100 hrs, whichever comes first (and its always the six months). I prefer to be conservative on this. I do it myself, so the expense isn't all that great.

Not a chance

It's this sort of thing that causes me to take manufacturer's recommendations with a grain of salt.

I mean seriously, they want you to replace the exhaust elbow every couple years but it's okay to leave a dirty $10 oil filter on? I'm sure there's engineering data that will support their recommendations but jeez, doesn't common sense enter into their thinking at some point?

When changing my oil I always put a new filter on. There is a fair amount of dirty oil left in the filter if I don't. I try to change the oil twice each year and always have fresh oil in the engine during winter storage. It's cheap insurance toward long engine life. BTW, while the equipment is out we change the transimission oil at each engine oil change since they use the same oil.

I do change my oil about three times a year which averages out at around 30 hours of operation. The filter gets replaced every other time or perhaps at around 60 hours. I know I'm well within the manufacturer guidelines. It would take much longer than 60 hours to clog the element and impair filtration and besides by changing the oil at 30 hours and starting once again with clean oil the continuous usage of the filter will perhaps be closer to 45 hours than the actual 60. It may be convenient to change the filter every time the oil is changed but I assure you it is more convenient to do it every other time. Been doing it for years and never had a problem.

Change filter every time

My regimen is to change the filter every time the oil is changed. Also, I fill the filter with as much oil as I can before screwing it on. Plus, crank the engine briefly with the vacuum release switched off to build up oil pressure before starting. Can't do this too much otherwise one can suck water up into the cylinders. Have to wait at least 5 minutes between cranking.

As another point of reference, on a Cessna 172 Lycoming engine they recommended 50 hours between oil changes and 25 hours (mandatory) between changes for Part 135 (commercial operation).

now that we are talking Yammer engines... what is the best RPM to run them at ? How many hours do you run it before climbing in the engine compartment to look things over. I have a clean roomy compartmant.

I too change roughly every 50 hours as did the PO. I think I will stick with it because the inside of my engine at over 3000 hours is cleaner than many engines with 400 hours.. I also flush the engine with clean oil twice each fall to be sure she sits with perfectly clean oil over the winter. Oil is cheap, engines expensive. Oh and she has only ever had Rotella T..

My A4 was pretty dam clean inside at 40 years with NO oil filter other than the area below the clutch pack were the dirt settled out of the oil because the motor is installed with about a 15 degree incline
