I have been rebuilding a 84 model Catalina 30 which was totaled by fire. The project has taken a lot of time but the results are very rewarding. The windows and aluminum frames were destroyed. Until now, I have been happy with no windows but want to finish the project. I contacted Catalina and was told that they did not have any of the old style windows. Can anyone help me find either new or used replacement frames at a reasonable cost?

Retro fit windows

In the vol. 19, No 3, August 2001 issue of Mainsheet Magazine; in the Catalina Technical notes section is an ad on page T28, lower left hand corner that offers retrofit windows for C-30's. I am threatening to someday replace my standard windows but the need hasn't arisen as of yet. This is the route I intend to go.

new style windows

I think the company is cruising concepts- or they've chnaged their name. the set of replacement windows is about $800 includes the sealer for outside and a trim ring for inside. the windows look like the new style without a frame.

Do They Leak?

Thanks for the responces. I am awaire of the "new style" windows which are available. They look great but cost around $850. My other concern is, since they are placed on the fiberglass with no lip or recess to fit into, how well do they seal! The last thing I want is to add more places for leaks.

What About The Fire?

James, thanks for the window question, but what caused the fire and how "bad" was the "total"? There must be a lesson for all of us to learn here.

Electrical Fire ?

Do not know for shure because I got the vessel after a repair facility had partially rebuilt her. They completed 90 percent of the glass work leaving the hardware and interior to be finished. The cabin top, from the hatchway to the mast, was completely burned. All interior woodwork was burned. The fire even burned the sails off the boom! I was told that the cause of the fire was suspected to be an electrical short in the wiring to the bilge pump. Please don't ask about the fuse or circuit breaker as none of the electrical system was left in the boat when I received it.

Here's a thought

If you find a cat 30 in close proximity to your boat, you might be able to talk the owners out of them. Or, if you don't think they would notice, you could obtain them by "alternative methods" after "star-gazing" some night. --I should add that our boats berth next to each other and he has done a great job on the restoration--just had to needle a little. (When are we heading to Freeport!?)
