Old Style Mast step

I have a broken mast step. (Z190 tapered mast) It happened when I was de-masted in Lake Michigan a couple of years ago. As a result, I can't raise or lower the mast. The marina put the mast back up and it is stable. I'm looking for an inexpensive way to correct this. I have access to a milling machine and related tools. Has anyone machined the part that goes into the mast and the deck plate? I was thinking of machining this out of a solid piece of aluminum. If you have any other good ideas, let me know. I don't have two to three hundred dollars to spent on this. Thank for your help.

What year...

...is your 23? The base changed pre/post 1987 from a 2-pin top hat and base to a taller slotted base with a through bolt. Any fix depends on the style.

Your first idea

is probably the best, machining will be strong. Can the old one be straightened and welded? Mine (1987) has no insert in the mast, just a U plate on the deck that the mast sits in with a through bolt in a slot to allow tilting...very simple! Yours is what I thought was the older (1985/86) version. Good luck!

mast step

Our mast step is like Chris s , ours is 89 with z spar , right after we bought it we had a mishap and the original step shattered , The dealer where we bought it simply took a step from another boat , Out mast just sits on the plate with one thru bolt < It has not been any problem for 11 years > Mike

New Mast step

I have a new mast step the part that goes on the deck. I bought it when I purchased a 1987 23 but never used it. It was really tough finding it. I have since sold the 23 and have no use for it. I gave around $300 for it if you would like to make an offer for it I'd be happy to consider it. sailor 1182
