I just noticed, upon rewatching Jon's video, that Kryss does a quick check of his masthead after the second tack. I think he was making sure he didn't catch a tree. That is not an obstacle most of us are use to watching out for.
It goes to illustrate that one needs to pay attention to more than what is on or under the water. Sailing from a boat ramp means all kinds of low overhead obstacles. Powerlines and tree branches can catch a sailor by surprise.
