Old PAR pump wiring question.

I have an old PAR diaphragm pump that was used to pump out the shower water. I want to re-use it, but am wondering about the wiring. It only has two black wires coming off of the motor. Can either wire be a positive or a negative? Does it affect the direction the pump pulls water? I found the original wiring diagram, and it doesn't specify, so i'm going to assume it does not matter?

Shouldn’t matter but if you want to see, just touch the wires to the battery posts
HA! I already mounted the pump with tiny short leads. I need to get a small 12v lithium battery for easily checking stuff like this. I guess i will just check before finalizing my crimps. Thanks.

That certainly works.

I carry a small battery pack that I can use to do those kind of direct connections for trouble shooting. I find it very conveniente and a lot easier than trying to hook up a direct connection to my batteries. Just a FYI...

I had to install the pump to get all the hose connections and lengths just right to fit in a very tight space. The old hose to the thru-hull was looking pretty scarry, so i wanted to get this done asap. The wiring was going to be less of a concern, so knew i could figure it out later. The leads are not so short that i cant work with them easily, but they certainly wont reach a battery. I'm re-doing all of the wiring from the shower to the pump and then to the distribution panel, so nothing had been run yet to allow me to do some simple testing.

Yeah this has been on my list of things to get for quite a while now. I'm always ordering stuff from Amazon. I just keep forgetting to grab one.

Apropos of checking boat (12 v.) circuits, a ship wright I know has kept several of his older & superseded 12 volt drill motor batteries from long gone tools. He uses them with varying leads to check out 12 volt motors and devices in general.

Yeah this has been on my list of things to get for quite a while now. I'm always ordering stuff from Amazon. I just keep forgetting to grab one.
They are really handy. I use one to check device function, as I build circuits (did that last connection really connect?) and more.

I had an issue coming across the Atlantic. I was mid-ocean and my propane switch started to give me problems. So while sailing I tried to figure out was was going on and it was not happening easily. It finally stopped working completely and I sure wasn't going a week or so without the ability to cook. I rigged up a direct connection from the battery pack to the solenoid so I could turn it on and off by hooking up the wires to the solenoid directly to the battery pack. Got me to the Islands so I could sit back and rip apart my electrical system to figure out what was going on.... Otherwise I would have had to do other gymnastics to get the stove back running. Much easier this way...

Oh good grief - someone in the past had installed an inline fuse BEHIND the entire wiring loom. It couldn't be seen or accessed without pulling my whole wiring harness out.... The fuse wasn't the problem, the fuse holder was simply coming apart... It took me hours to find it...

p.s. I forgot - in addition to the idiotic and unnecessary inline fuse - they had spliced a different wire color so I couldn't even follow the wire...

We had the same fuse holder problem in our wire harness to the starter solenoid, cleverly hidden underneath the alternator.
Thanks to our imaginative and helpful Catalina Mainsheet magazine, even starting in 1987 we didn't have to reinvent the wheel, assuming you were smart enough to read the danged magazine!

I once helped survey a Nordic 44 planning to sail to Hawaii. Told 'em about the fuseholder. They had four I could see in plain sight. Guess what happened because they ignored my $6.00 suggestion...

With old boats it's always an interesting "exploration" of all the add-ons and changes that have been done since original build. It is an advantage having a boat like the Catalina that has hundreds, or is it now thousands? to have info. There were only about 200 boats of my design ever built and I believe there are only 3 of them in the US - at least I only know of 3.

I wish I had rolls of different colored tinned marine grade wires. It would be awesome to have every single wire on my boat correctly color coded. A big project that with time I'll slowly get to. I've got all the major work done, now it's just the small stuff...

I bet they had a fun sail to Hawaii....

They made 1,801 Catalina 34s. Probably 3,600 of the C36. 6,000+ of the C30 and 15,000+ of the C22. My 1981 C25 was hull #4951 and they kept making them for decades after 1981. CY made over 80,000 boats since the early 70s.

Yes, I heard the trip to Hawaii was sparkling...:yikes:

A small 12vdc motorcycle battery would be a lot cheaper than a lithium battery, for testing things. Safer, too.
