I believe that it has a solid state ignition. Hence there are no points. The spark is timed from the crankshaft magnet. The entire ignition system is the flywheel with embedded magnet and the solid state ignition module. And a shut-off switch.

I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the main reasons for solid state ignition on a boat would be...
-It's more reliable. Distributors are prone to problems in high humidity environments
-Much lower maintenance
-And most importantly, there's no distributor to make gas fumes go boom (although, there's no doubt it still can happen)

It has breaker points for sure, I have change them a few times over the years.
I would welcome a solid state update for sure

You are correct that the small Nissan, Mercury engines were built by Tohatsu. Suzuki and Honda are different manufacturers. You may want to call the U. S. office of Tohatsu and ask that question. You will need the year, model and serial number. Former and retired Tohatsu dealer.
