Have a 1981 Hunter - contantly pulling hard to port on the wheel - very uncomfortable - does this under power or sail, but more pronounced under power for sure. Independent of wind direction when tacking - suggestions on how to trobleshoot ? I hope it does not mean a bent rudder or shaft......... Any help appreciated

May be as simple as a loose cable in your steering mechanism. It may just need to be tightened or if it is as old as the boat, may need to be replaced.

Just noticed where you were. If you need some help, I can stop by and work on it with you. I did some work on my '79 Catalina 30's sterring system when I first got her.

Is one side of the bottom way gunkier than the other. Solution: turn you boat around in the slip for the next couple years. The growth will even out and it will be equally slow on both tacks.

Just a thought!
Good Luck!

on our hunter 40 legend, the bottom of rudder had some damage from hitting bottom. It caused the boat to pull to the starboard. once we hauled the boat out and had it repaired, it tracked perfectly again. Maybe its time to haul your boat out nad have a look....

Someone needs to dive down and check for debris wrapped around the rudder, strut, keel, etc... Also check the rudder for damage and bearing for looseness.

Obviously it needs a front end alignment. if you don't get it fixed it will wear the rudder unevenly. ;)

I had the same problem on my H380. We haul it and found that the rudder was curved. Not sure why it got that way. Hunter replaced my rudder and the problem disappeared. Make a template and see if both sides of the rudder are the same. We had the same symptoms you mentioned.

There was a post a while back from Sam Lust on these. I think if the 33 is a shoal draft that the rudder actually extends deeper than the keel and is prone to damage. You should post this question over in the Cherubini Hunter forum. You'll encounter many more H33 owners there.
