Old Headliner

Dear Mentors,

My "new" 77 Colombia Payne 9.6 has an old stained headliner. In the head it sags too. I'll bet that would be expensive to replace. What are my options? Can I just remove it and paint what's under there? Thanks for your always great advice!

pretty good thread about this within the last couple of weeks, and it has come up frequently over the years. Check the archives. Like others, I tore out my smelly, stained carpet headliner and painted the fiberglass. I used white semi-gloss Killz brand - oil based. The surface is not smooth, but I'm happy with the result. It was a big job dealing with the old adhesive (sanding and scraping) and the embedded fibers.

Many options

There are a ton of options for headliners. Depends on how much time and labor and money you want to invest. Under what you now have is more than likely plain old fiberglass, without any gel coat. So, the first, down, dirty and cheap way is to paint it. Just goes up from there. Lots of different ideas in the archives. Do a search and see if you find something you like.

Cleaning off the old adhesive can be problematic and a pain. Suggest getting white truck bed liner coating. It will look a lot like the gelcoat finishes in newer boats, be low maintenance and even have a slight insulating benefit.

A better idea might be to epoxy furring strips and then put up a thin plywood panel. You could actually insulate above the panel, between the furring strips, and make the boat a bit more comfortable. 3mm plywood would work nicely, and it would allow you to get at deck hardware fairly easily while still keeping the interior looking nice.
