My 1980 30' Catalina has an old fridge ( the only ID on it is NP) that has worked well until now but suddenly stopped cooling. The compressor runs and the housing it is in gets hot. The condensor radiator fan runs too. A quick push on the bicycle type vent gave me a puff of what is probably freon ( because of it's age) so there is gas in the system. But it doesn't cool. There is a drier/filter in the liquid line and I wonder if that is the problem, ie, filter plugged. Does anyone have any thoughts on this problem. Canukwi.

Most like it's R-12, Because you have an access port, it most likely means it's been worked on before. Is there ANY cooling effect on the evaporator? Do you hear any kind of "hissing" in it too? It could be out of R-12, but they only hold a few ozs. 134 is not an option on the old units either. hope this helps a little. :)

Hey Denise, you're pretty smart. You already answered what I was going to suggest.
To Canukwi: by the way R 22 is no longer manufactured refrigerant, so it is very expensive to recharge the system should you have a freon leak. If the housing is getting hot the compressor may be running until it overheats, until it goes into thermal lockout & shuts off. Eventually this will kill the compressor. If your unit is an expensive cold plate type then call a repairman. If its a cheaper 110 volt fridge like mine, then its probably cheaper to replace then repair it.
