Old CDI furler

I have what is probably a 30-year-old CDI furler, which is in good shape, except for a missing piece on the plastic drum. I went down to the boat this weekend and wanted to raise the drum up to inspect the turnbuckle, but found I could not lift it. I took the cotter pin that connects the drum to the extrusion, and the extrusion lifts up and down, but the drum does not. Any suggestions? Do I have to disassemble the drum halves? The newer CDI drums seem to just sit down in the metal cylinder, on top of the nylon and washer. I'm not sure what, if anything, holds the older one down.

I upgraded my drum but you are correct. You have to split the plastic drum apart to slide the extrusion and the throat up. There are four screws in the spool and a couple of others on top of the square piece to remove. Hope nothing is cracked on yours.

Thanks! I am considering upgrading my drum, but I don't have the little spacer that would fit between the old aluminum extrusion and the new drum. I didn't want to get the entire ckit6 from CDI. But, someday . . . . I may look into fashioning a spacer from some rigid material.
