In grandfather's she'd he was a WW2 Naval officer. We located this old brass looking oval bell.Looks to be a bell taken from a sea vessel? Does anybody have a clue as to whom the manufacturer is. Or was.?

I would bet it is not from a ship, but from something more industrial. It does not look large enough to be from a buoy. A ship's bell is a beloved, prized piece of jewelry. How does it sound? Could it be a doorbell?

It very well could be a door bell .But the owner was a dedicated US Naval officer WW2.

I give my vote to "doorbell". If the circular handle is turned, I think the inner parts would rotate causing the round pieces on the star shape to hit the bell's inside walls. It might have hung down from the nut and bolt or perhaps stood up from some metal bracket. Is a puzzlement!

I like the idea of doorbell .!! But others outside the sailboat world told me the bell could possibly be 1.) A large horse saddle chime 2.)An "altar bell" used in the church of God such as angelican or episcopal.!! Both were unsure of whom the manufacturer or what year it was made.!!
