Recent lotto was $600 Million. Enough to allow any of you (us) to cast off and actually follow the DREAM. Now reality hits you. What would you do. Say adios and cast off in your new blue water dream boat? Or buy a yacht and a crew and fly your new jet to each new port to meet them for a sundowner? Or keep your 35' coastal cruiser and become a hero philanthrapanist (sp?)? Actually with $600M ($300M net) you could do all 3. But where does your heart take you? Dream on............

Don't need mega-millions. It would be nice, but I figure I'd need a lot less, about $600,000.00, invested just so. How much do you need?

I might get the teak redone in my boats, after a shopped around for a good price!

I could do anything I imagine I'd want to do for $100k. Another $100k to live on for the few years left.

The rest needs to be given to those less fortunate.

The only way to buy a sailboat and wind up a millionaire, is start out as a multi-millionaire.:poke:

I'd pay for the restoration of that Kettenburg featured on a thread a year or so ago And I'd pay to train young workers to do other worthy sailboats Or donate an endowment

Those with 300 million are no happier than those with only 200 million.

Convince Bruce King to come out of retirement to design a custom cold molded boat from scratch just for us. Have it built at one of the great yards in Maine. Get on it and go. No plan, just go. Has to be small enough to gunkhole and not require dedicated crew. Aside from the new boat, that is our current plan.

Hello ... Bob Perry .... Here's my simple basic requirements, I want it in one year from the date of contract. You have complete authority to oversee all phases of design and construction, etc. Call me if you have any further questions ... you have an open checkbook and full authority to do the best job youve ever imagined.
..... Yes of course, it has to be a fast, sea-kindly 'double ender' of no more than ~45-50' LOA & set up for single/double handing and exquisitely simple no matter the ultra-advanced engineering required.

Just what I'm doing now. Retired. Getting boat fixed up for the summer cruise. Go on summer cruise. Come home. Get RV ready for trip up north. Go on RV trip. Come home about September. Go sailing. Get on motorcycles. Come home occasionally to wash clothes and check on my parents who are living at my house. Now I remember why I didn't buy a lottery ticket. Didn't need to. Living the dream now.:dance::dance:

Brand new bluewater boat that I could still manage with just 2 and I'd go get lost for a few years. I'd agree with prior posts, I'd be the same level of happy while sailing under those conditions as I am now while sailing with a smaller boat and bank account. Returning to the dock simply because I felt like it instead of the upcoming work week...now that would be the difference.

I'd buy a new boat, for sure.... but with that kind of money you'd have to hire an arab prince to show you how to spend it all on yourself.

I live pretty simply, so with that kind of windfall..... I can only imagine using the resource to benefit others. I think it would be cool to set up some kind of endowment that would provide money to deserving recipients. Kind of like the old "The Millionaire" T.V. show.... totally anonymous.... then I spend my time researching the recipients.

As an endowment you wouldn't really be spending the principle.... just distributing the interest. 380 million at 5% 19 mil..... I can live on less than 7 mil/yr.... give away one mil/month.... still have the 380mil seed money to fund other causes once I'm gone.

Since I currently live on less than 50 thousand a year. An extra 50 grand would make life much more comfortable. Maybe I would buy a share in our marina for a million or so to get the dredging done and some new piers. I wouldn't take a lump sum but would take the annuity. I would make provision for the balance of the annuity to provide a scholarship fund at a university at the time of my death.

First, I would buy a beach cat, perhaps a Hobie Tiger. I miss small boats most.

Right on. Our current boat is a 19' trailerable, and though I plan on getting a larger cruising boat at some point, we don't intend to ever sell the small boat... too much sailing fun for such small coin. I also still windsurf now and then.

Back on topic, we just got back from a week in St Lucia, staying at Marigot Bay, where we saw a few of the boats that $100mil could buy.

One of our outings was a crewed day-trip south and back on a 40' Catalina. It was very relaxed and casual. At one point, as we were chatting away, the talk drifted to dream-boats, and we asked the 3 St Lucian crewmembers what they'd do with a million dollars. One young crewmember who is taking the courses toward being a charter captain, said he wanted to finish his education, get his own boat, and do nothing but sail. The boat captain said he'd want to have a boat big enough to take his church congregation for some cruising. One crewmember said she'd set up an orphanage.

So... lotto-winning or not, I'm just going to try to keep my fat white overfed face shut, remain grateful for all our advantages and blessings, make what donations I can.... and if good fortune ever drops a pile in our lap, I hope to have the grace to give the majority to help those in genuine need.

(Ok, a 35 to 40 ft cruiser would be pretty cool too)

Put new engine mounts on my boat, set up a trust, contribute to useful causes, and leave the "rat race."
