Saw the posting with the joke this morning, now I can't find it. Is it gone? Did I imagine it? A number of us related it to sailing, thus it was sailing related. Was it removed?

Lats & Atts Cruisers Forum

It's there in Greg's pub. Apparently the Lats & Atts folks have more of a sense of humor that a couple of people here.

Maybe what we need here is a new forum

Something that is set aside for non-sailing related topics. I could expand the definition of the Political Forum, or add something new. Any thoughts?

Phil, I am rather partial to the format

on the wooden boat forum with their six sub sections. Divided into building, design, people, resources, misc boat related and the bilge. The members are quick to tell someone that their post belongs in the bilge if indeed it does. Rude, crude, profane, sacred is all permitted in the bilge but the rest is for serious discussion. That's what I'm thinking, too

A forum with very relaxed guidelines, that doesn't get archived, where this kind of post can be moved rather than deleted. A good place for meta discussions (discussions about site discussions) too. :)

Didn't Mean to Create a Problem

Phil, I like this forum and didn't mean to do anything to upset anyone. Some of the guys suggested I edit the post in question and change Home Depot to West Marine but I didn't get back in in time to do that. So far as another forum for funnies/etc. and other stuff I think it's a good idea. You could add a "Bonehead Sailing forum" especially for folks like me to share our sailing/maintenance misadventures. Once again being newly back to sailing after a 40 year abscence I find this forum invaluable and had no intention of ruffling any feathers. Hugh S/V La Bourgogne

Phil, the P, R and Angst

is a fine "cover" for this type of topic. No new headings are needed -- we have enough already. Keep up the good work, and thanks again for all you do and having this great forum. Stu

Hey Phil!

Maybe if you DID start a new forum it could be for the naked-version of that joke. You know, R rated. ;)

No Need for New Forum

I'm of the opinion that there isn't a need for a new forum - there's plenty of opportunity for boating related discussions in the forums currently presented. In fact, it may only be me, but I noticed a sort of subtle shift in the "tone" of this series of forums about the same time that the "Politics, Religion and other Angst" forum became available. I'm sure it's only a coincidence, or my perception, but for some reason, (and I even suspected it was the winter season...) the tone in many of the posts has moved away from overwhelmingly helpful and polite to a more sarcastic and sharp attitude. I've spent exactly zero time in the PR&A forum because there are plenty of other places on the web that I can get more than my fill of that. My uneducated opinion is that a lot of people carry over the tone from that forum into these boating related forums - figuring that "it was OK over there, it must be OK over here". Again, I'm infrering the tone "over there", but I bet I'm right. Anyway, Keep up the good work Phil! Words of Wisdom: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It. Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Could the tone

have something to do with the situation we as a country are in? Depressing and getting worse. Nobody smiles anymore and folks are on edge. Not enough stability anymore. No job security. Just contracts and more litigation. Lawyers coming out our ears. Indebtedness rising. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The middle class is evaporating into thin air? Our borders are porous and we wait for hours on airplanes through no fault of our own. No one takes responsibility anymore for anything. Soldiers shoot and kill combatants and are charged with murder. Ask a question of a prisoner and some call it torture. Our leaders lie and cheat us. We are creating generations of squealers(rats). We can't even pledge allegiance to the flag in school?? Never mind pray to our Lord. While some here worry about the "tone". I could go on and on as to the reasons for sarcasm and short attitudes and negative tones that are surfacing in our everyday affairs. Not to mention this web site. There are many differant people who post here and if we as a whole can't understand and be able to comprehend what the participant is "trying" to convey . We are all in trouble. Some can't spell and others are forthright while others are outright scarstic. Just like we do with our neighbors, we must become more understanding of others faults and work on our compassion. It takes work and that seems to be a negative word today. There is so much negativity all around us, it is only logical that some spills over to this forum. Phil has done a wonderful job and I'm sure it tiring and troublesome at times. His attempt to steer the negativity to a special section is a noble attempt, which I applaud and marvel at. What we have here is wonderful and may it only get better. Thanks for letting me spew. Sailing season is here!! yee ha Keep it up, Ctskip

Actually it is all my fault. I can't giggle with a

keyboard so that makes me cranky. There are some who post questions here without having invested much thought about how to ask the question. And there are others here who answer those questions with about the same level of mental effort. I am sure that better questions would receive better answers. An example of the type of question is: I am getting water in the bilge of my XYZ 22.5. Any suggestions?

It's this forum

I have followed this forum for 5-6 years. The tone used to be more helpful. There are now a handful of people who dominate the board and seem to think they are in a best-sailor-in-the-world contest. I do most of my forum posting and answering on the C25/250 site now. At that site there are no "dumb" questions and the tone is always helpful.

That's the idea here

These sites are about production boats, and because of that we get a lot of new sailors. Catalinas, Hunter, Beneteaus, Macs, and Odays are a first "overnight" boat for most sailors. The tone here _must_ be helpful. While I agree with Ross in a technical sense, I suspect that many folks posting questions here don't enough experience to formulate a clear question. But by probing a little we can usually figure out what the problem is. Over the years many owners have discovered how much fun it can be to help these new sailors learn the craft. I'd sure like to see this forum get back to that mindset. Now, if you want to move up to the graduate course... go to http://cruising.sailboatowners.com that's our cruising sailor's forum -- the old CWBB. Lot's of _very_ accomplished sailors there. It's not gentle but it is stimulating. :)

Just don't put the Boat Babe in the "Bilge"

That just wouldn't seem appropriate!
