Removing oil

I used a hand pump the first 5 times I change the oil in my Cat 30 with a Universal 5424. A couple of weeks ago I bought a Topsider MVP oil change pump from West marine. It looks like a 2 gal steel gas can with the pump built in, pump it 40 times, stick tube into dip stick tube and release crimp. Followed instructions and pumped another 15 times. This allowed me to use both hands to fish around when I was nearing all the oil I could get out. Enine is supposed to hold 5 1/2 qts, but I can only get out about 4. WM had it on sale for $22, couldn't turn it down. I'm sure others work just as good, but get one that will allow use of both hands, the admiral does not like to help with oil changes.

I changed my oil last weekend with a hand pump. But I was unable to pump all of the oil out. Any thoughts on how to get the 4 quartrs out. I only got out 2. But then 2 fresh quarts is better than none!

Gotta get the oil good

of it out in a reasonable amount of time. Just idling at the dock with no load doesn't seem to work, I usually motor over to the fuel or pump-out dock and back first. Engine's nice

Do yourself a favour

Do your self a favour and buy a vacuum pump from one of the local marine stores.Oil changes are clean with no dripping and minimal cleanup of the apparatus. And if the oil is hot, you will get most of it out.I also use mine to suck the antifreeze out of the engine (difficult to drain), and dry the bilge for winter lay-up.Ed

Removing Oil

I used a hand pump, it took forever...finally broke down and bought a canister style vacum pump....very happy I did. My M25xp holds 4 quarts and after the pump gets about 3.5, I remove the drain plug and the last .5 quart drips into a small pan I made to fit underneath-I use the pump to get that oil also.

If your engine has a drain plug in the bottom of the pan the easiest way to get all the oil out is to replace the plug with a barbed hose fitting. Clamp an appropriate length of hose to the fitting. At the other end of the hose clamp the appropriate fitting for your pump out system. When it is time to change the oil, warm it up. (serves 2 purposes, less viscous fluid for easier pumping and gets any bad deposits that might be sitting in the bottom of the pan back in solution for removal). Uncork the upper end of the hose, attach the pump and suck away from the lowest point. Should get 99% of the oil that way.
