Can you recommend a good oil pump for the Catalina 309 oil change? and what about the filter wrench?

Would the Pela 2000, 2.6 qt. capacity work ok, or do you like something better?

Thanks,

I have a pair of cheap plastic/rubber "strap wrenchs" from Pepboys (I think) that have turned out to be the best tool for filter removal I've ever had.

I just use one of those drill-bit pumps and it works okay. I pump the oil out thru the fill tube using the adaptor that came with the pump and fairly stiff plastic tubing into a plastic gallon jug. You can drop these off at an Auto Zone for no charge for disposal.

The wrench is another story. I couldn't get any strap wrench to work when removing the original filter, so I bought a replacement filter from Yanmar and used it to size a cup wrench that has a square hole in the center for a regular socket wrench driver. It turns out that the filter is the same size as a Mercury outboard filter, but you would have to take the filter into a dealer to get the right one, as there is more than diameter involved. Unfortunately the replacement filters are slightly smaller than the original, so the cup wouldn't work the first time. I just used some channel locks and muscled the original one off...then cleaned up the mess. Using the replacement filter cup, the process is now a lot easier.

I have a Pela 2000. I bought it for my lawnmower initially, but I also use it on my 309. It will not hold the entire amount of oill drained though, so you have to empty it out once to fully drain the oil. With that being said, I do like the size of the device and simplicity, requiring no power sources, or a drill to use. The pump works like a simple hand billge pump. Its proved reliable for me for a couple of years now. As for the wrench, a simple plastic one works well if filter is clean and dry. It will slip though if not.
