I spilled some old motor oil in the cockpit of my boat and it left a pretty big stain in the nonskid. What should I use to remove the stain?

Funny you should ask that!

Prevention is better than cure and that is why we are shortly to introduce a non-skid sealant that is (demonstrably -see our website) oilproof. I remember having exaclty the situation you had some years ago. THere are several cleaners out there. Main problem is that the gelcoat is porous and the oil has soaked into the chalk that is in the pores. What I find to work (and I have tried the usual boat soaps etc) is our IG Pink, used undiluted. It too soaks into the gelcoat, dissolves the oil and brings it up to the surface where it can be rinsed away with water. I know that this sounds like a commercial but nearly all other cleaners contain water and therefore cannot do this. ANother alternative is to use an oxalic acid based cleaner such as FSR (Davis) but oxalic acid has whitening effect that may not be good if that is not the color of your gelcoat!. ALso it does tend to make the porosity worse over repeated use. Thanks Jim Willis

Using Tide detergent, water and a brush will pull

oil stains out of concrete. Maybe it will on your stain.

By all means try TIde

by all means try TIde and other cleaners and let me know what happened. I would be glad to send you a small sample of our IG pink for comparison it is the only product I kow that can remove stains from both vinyl and gelcoat. There is some science behind this. The chalk in the pores or "microcrevices" acts like a sponge to soak up oil and other stains. Dissolve out the chalk and out comes the stain too (een works on some rust stains. Concrete pores are different. In this case (I remember from our driveway in CA) Muriatic acid was the only theing that got rid of deep seated oil stains. Thanks Jim Willis
