Oil Sheen from Exhaust

I've noticed lately that I'm getting an oil sheen from my exhaust even when the engine is warmed up and has been running for an hour, so am wondering what the cause might be. The boat is relatively new to me so I don't have a lot of history, but I don't remember noticing the sheen before. The only thing I can think of that I've done lately is to fill the tank for the first time since I've had the boat. It was down to less than a half a tank when I filled it. I don't think the previous owner had changed filters in awhile so that's on my list of things to do. I'm wondering if the fueling could have stirred things up in the tank and maybe injectors are somewhat plugged (I thought I read something about that). I also notice a small bit of white smoke that dissapates within a foot of the exhaust pipe, but it's been cold here lately so maybe that's not related and/or a concern. I think I've always had that little bit of smoke. The engine is a 1990 28HP Volvo-Penta.

oil and steam ?

Blown head gasket? Have you looked closely at the crankcase oil? Raw water cooled? I don't know, but it isn't right.

The white smoke

is unburned fuel which would result in an oily sheen on the water (the unburned fuel). The cause is somewhere in the fuel delivery system. I would check for valve adustment, timing or fuel injector malfunction. A cylinder compression test and/or leakback test would go a long way toward determining the cause. Jim
