Hello all,
After returning from sailing I came in to my dock space and turn the motor off and noticed the oil pressure light was still on. I lifted the motor cover and heard a clicking sound, it was the electric lift pump. The pump remains running after the motor is off, and the oil pressure light stays on when everything is off. There are 2 wires that go into the lift pump and when I move one of them the pump stops. Is there a way to open the pump up, to check the wires and what does this have to do with the OP light? When you turn the key to start the motor the light goes off. Any ideas? 1997 C380 Westerbeke 42Bfour

Thanks, Russell

On our boat, killing the engine is done with a cable. Turning the key off stops the low oil pressure buzzer/light. Maybe a problem in your ignition switch?

The oil pressure light is on because while your engine is "on" electrically, it is not running, Jensen no oil pressure. That is normal. You need to figure out why your engine is on. How do you start your engine? Turn key, press starter button? Turn key until it starts like in a car? Now how do you stop? Pull cable until engine shuts off, then turn key off? Push stop button, then turn key off? Each engine has own process. Point is, your engine is not shutting off, causing fuel pump to run and run and the alarm to sound. Problem is likely in key switch, or did you try to turn engine off with key and engine continued to run, possibly damaging diodes in alternator?

Dang iPhone changing words. I don't know who "Jensen" is; should read "therefor".

I agree, Bad switch.. On that Westerbeke, pull the kill knob (?) oil pressure alarm should sound.. then turn off the switch .. should kill the alarm and the electric fuel pump.. If alarm sounds after the engine is stopped and the switch is off, the switch is not killing power to the main circuits, including the alternator..

Thanks guys,
I was looking at everything this morning on the engine and heard the fuel pump clicking even with the key off. By my fuel pump is a "preheat solinoid". I was really hot I guess from being on too long. I tapped on it with a screwdriver and the fuel pump went off. Could this solinoid be sticking on and causing the problems.
