Oil Paints for Bottom ?

why would you want to put oil in the water, better off with nothing....

I just plug my phone into my computer and they download to pictures.
If I don't have the patience for the download I just email the picture from my phone to my second email and download it from there.

Even on the lake near Asheville for the season should require a anti fouling just to keep the slime and algae off. Not sure why you would want to use an oil base paint up there. Yes I know the area too well. Went to school and go to the Smokies all the time.

You might consider a harder bottom paint like VC-17 - it lasts longer and easier to clean.

House oil paint isn't meant for continuous immersion. It will probably become a draggy peeling mess, and might release chemicals into the water.

VC17 is an interlux product and yes it is 2 part in that you mix the copper powder into the resin, but there is no "hardener"

Good question David. I too was thinking about painting the bottom with shinny top deck paint however I keep the boat on the trailer and just splash for the weekend. Right now I have some kind of anti foul bottom paint from the prev owner. I'm curios to see what kind of suggestion the group brings. Many thanks.

Our boat is mostly on the trailer, when not being sailed, though we sometimes leave her in the water for the weekend when possible, all in fresh water, so right now I have no paint on the bottom. Fernando, if your boat doesn't pick up much growth over the weekend, and you wash the bottom right after haulout... maybe you wouldn't need antifouling either.

if you are going to go to the trouble to paint anything on your boat and then expect it to last and look presentable, spend the extra few dollars and get the stuff that is proven...
the main reason I even say this is because once you put the paint on, if you find you have chosen the wrong product, you will be spending more money and waaaay more time trying to clean up the mess so you can do it right the second time around.

if you think deck and porch paint would work, then you would love the regular bottom paint for boats, and if you dont see the need for an antifouling paint, why go to the trouble of even painting it at all?... your boat will slip thru the water easier on the smooth gelcoat than it will on the painted surface.... but if its ugly and stained beyond repair i can understand, but then the wrong paint will only make it worse.

if you are trying to keep the bottom growth off then the VC17 is a very good premium antifouling paint, but for your needs I think the west marine premium antifouling paint will work very well for you... something like the PCA gold, a one part, premixed paint... at around 70 dollars a quart, regular price. you will need about a quart and a half to do it right on your 22footer if you apply it with a half length roller....
do you moor your boat in fresh water? if you sail off a trailer on the weekends you dont really need the antifouling paint, but if your mooring then its a good idea... and the couple of weeks a year in salt water, it would be a good idea to have it painted with an antifouling product.... good luck and have fun with it...

I tried an experiment on my stubby keel. Since it was on sale I bought a quart of malamine paint [use for heavy use areas in kitchen] and painted one side. Three years later it is still in good shape c'ept for those nicks. I trailer a lot so don't know how it would stand up in teh water full time. Mind you I spent a solid week on salt water last year. So far so good.

Bingo!!

Even Awlgrip at $300.00/gal will not withstand constant immersion. The OP needs either nothing or an inexpensive bottom paint... In a lake nothing can work ok depending upon the level of slime growth..

That is the kind of sailing I do. I mostly sail on a fresh water lake and a few weeks on the coast each summer. I have oil based rustoleum (not the marine bottom paint, just plain old rustoleum) on my boats bottom and three seasons later it still looks great. I have been using rustoleum for years and have done so on three different boats. It coasts just a bit more than the off brand paints but I like to use it because I know that even 5 years later, I can go to just about any store and find an exact color match when I need to touch up.

Light sand, pressure was, and then roll and tip and you will be very happy with the results.

You need to use an image-hosting web site to provide the HTML code that you can cut-and-paste into the body of a post like this, so your pix will display.

Image Shack is a popular site and free to use (although there are many similar sites.) You create an account, then, when you want to post a photo onto a forum like this, you go to your image host, have it browse the photos on your computer until you find the one you want, then upload it to the image host (all very intuitive and user friendly on the host web site.)
