I have a 89 Cat 30 with a Universal M25XP with around 890 hours. Last weekend on an extended trip I noticed oil in the bilge and splashed around the engine. I could not find any obvious leaks under load or at rest. A few months back I changed my oil myself for the first time and noticed the dipstick was reading high and always had oil above the full mark. Is it possible that I overfilled the crankcase and oil was coming out of the dipstick opening? Today I changed my oil and measured what I pulled out. I removed 5 quarts and around 6 ounces not counting what was left in the filter. I replaced 4 quarts plus around 6 ounces to the full mark after the filter was allowed to fill. I plan on cleaning the engine with some degreaser and keeping an eye on the oil level and around the engine and bilge. Has anyone else had a similar experience if they accidentally overfilled their crankcase.

Oil leak

Check the dip stick tube and the archives. Hope you didn't blow a seal with overfilling.

Oil level

Hopefully, that's just the result of overfilling. We have the same engine and it's full (with the filter also full) with four qts of oil. Owner's manual also indicates four qts capacity. Another source of leak could be the oil filter gasket or the tube leading from the drain plug (where you suck the oil out when changing). Best of luck. Gary
