No, But

Well I have never heard of a starter shaft but rotating shafts are rotating shafts. There is either a shaft seal or an "O" ring that seals it. It looks like it might be the cam shaft but I can't tell from the angle of the picture. There is a "housing" that surrounds the shaft that no doubt carries the seal. If you have the owners manual that should tell you the replacement part #. It should be a simple act of taking off the housing and either replacing the whole unit or replacing the seal itself. For my own edification, is there some sort of "handle" that fits in the shaft that allows you to "hand start" the engine?

Oil Leak

That is the shaft for the hand crank on this model engine. Not sure but would assume it has a regular old seal in there. You really need an engine manual to fix it right, but should be a pretty easy fix. I wouldn't pull the cover plate till you see a book on it. Some of these, there is lots of stuff connected together inside there. Basically I think you can just pull that cover plate off and replace the seal. I have a book around here someplace, and will try to check and let you know for sure whats in there.

You are looking at the camshaft that drives the valve train and the fuel injection pump. It has a key at the open end to attach a handle for manual starting. There is an oil seal that mounts on the timing gear case. The bad news is that to replace the seal you must remove the gear case. The manual gives the following steps: 1) Disconect negative battery cable from negative battery terminal. 2) Remove alternator 3) Remove oil filter 4) Detach the control cables from speed control lever and the stop lever 5) Remove fuel injection pump 6) Remove sea water pump 7) Remove crankshaft pulley and key (use of a puller necessary) 8) remove manual starter cover 9) Remove set screw at the end of the camshaft and remove the manual starter drive pin. 10) Remove the timing gearcase. 11) Remove any gasket residue from gearcase. 12) Replace camshaft and crankcase seals; a) pry out old seal working carefully not to damage the seal surface. b)clean the seal recess in the cover with solvent and blow dry. c) apply gasket sealer to the periphery of the seal d) position new seal in cover recess with its open end facing inside of the gearcase. Drive the seal into place with a suitably sized seal driver. 13) Reverse the removal procedure to reinstall the gearcase. How bad is the leak? If its minor I would just find a cap to fit the manual starter cover and clean that out every couple of months. Buena Suerte.

Wow!!!

It seems I have to remove everything to fix this. I like the idea of the cap, I have seen photos of motors with caps in the shaft, this will be easy and will fix the problem. The leak is minor. Gracias!!!
