Earlier this year I changed the oil and fuel filters on my Catalina 27 for the first time. It took a long time and created a real mess because both filters were stuck. Now I have read that some people jam a screw driver through the filter elements and then use the screw driver to twist the elements off. I suppose the idea is basically sound, but I question whether this compromises the filter and allows debris to pass though into the oil or fuel. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Handy tools

Bob, Why not use an oil filter remover from your local auto supply. I also use a new tool sold in hardware stores. It is a handle with a rubber band that wraps around the oil filter and back into the handle. As you apply pressure, the band tightens. It's also great for opening jars, and turning larger circular items that you don't want to damage with a tool. Good luck. Ed

Plus sandpaper

I use an oil filter remover from an auto supply store. Usually, I put some sandpaper between it and the filter to reduce slippage. Works for me every time.

Oil Pump

I use an pump ($40 West Marine) that you attach to the battery that sucks the oil out through the dipstick, and like everyone else use the oil filter tool with sandpaper to get the filter off
