What grade/ type of oil should I be using for for the 'stern gland' on
my Vega. I presume its the original one (V3040)- boat is fitted with
the Volvo MD6B engine.

thanks

Hi John

I have the same system with the oil reservoir inside the cockpit locker with
a pipe down to the gland and just use cheap supermarket oil, having the
container in the locker to top up before long trips. Obviously do not use
this oil in the engine!

I find with mine it needs topping up after about 15 hours motoring, but that
might be because my stern tube bearing is slightly worn. I'd say I use 1 -
2 litres of the cheap stuff per year.

Tim, are you describing the combi system? I don't seem to have an oil
reservoir or at least haven't found it. Whereabouts is it located in
your boat? Thanks, Trevor V2915

Hi Trevor

When I bought Xiphion 1209 she had the petrol with combi system. The engine
would stop every 20 mins so organised to replace with a yanmar 2gm (Bit big
but managed to get on the cheap Yes it does fit just) Prior to replacing
the engine I fixed the petrol problem by replacing the oil to turbo diesel
oil as recommended by an engineer friend. Sure enough, the petrol didnt
miss a beat after this, but had the yanmar in my garage so replaced anyway.

Due to engine replacement, including cutting out and building new engine
beds to accommodate the larger sump of the yanmar, I had to loose the combi
system, changing to conventional 25mm stainless steel shaft.

I did however re-use the original stern gland as this worked perfectly and
Id run out of ££££ by this point. (water tight seal that shaft goes
through before exiting boat). It is this original stern gland that has the
oil reservoir feeding it for lubrication purpose.

The reservoir for this oil fed seal is located (on my boat) inside the port
side locker, up high on the inboard side near the locker lid. Its like a
small oil bottle with a pipe out of the base down to the stern gland.

Steve Birch is the technical guy, however Im pretty sure different Vegas
have different systems. I used to sail on one (Aquila) that had a screw
grease system 1 turn circa every 5 hours of motoring.

Have a look to see what type yours is. If its got a pipe running up from
it then its probably oil or grease fed.

Good luck

Hi Trevor/Tim

The original was grease fed but then a few owners came upo with using a
viscious oil so it was automatically fed. Most Vegas now have theis
system but a few still have teh grease fed gland (Same gland just
different lubrication/seal method)

Cheers

Hi.:
I, too, replaced the Albin 021 with a Yanmar 1GM10. I use
the 25mm shaft and the original stuffing box and stern
bearing. I don't remember that I ever had any water come
through- I grease the stuffing box every now and then
(about every 2 to 3 months, depending how much I use the
engine). I have a spare stuffing box, I replaced the last
time after about 10 years use. It's an easy task, and I
wouldn't use any thing else.

Thanks for the info chaps. I checked my boat and can't see any lubricating device for the stern gland. Does grease from the stuffing box lubricate the stern gland? By the way, how do you grease the stuffing box? I don't see a grease fitting. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure we talk about the same thing- but there are
two items (or parts) to talk about. From the prop-- there
is the Stern bearing; this is a only a bushing that should
last many years (and is very easy to replace). Then comes
the stuffing box. There are two bushings and two seal
rings, also easy to replace. The stuffing box has a plug
where you press the grease in (but you need to take the
plug out! I do it every two or three months, depending how
much I use the engine). (Maybe your stuffing box is upside
down and you can't see the plug) If the plug is down, open
the clamps and turn the stuffing box so you have the plug
on top. (I put a rubber seal normally used for a faucet
[get it from Home Depot] between the grease gun and the
hole, I press in the grease until it comes out at the
forward seal ring). That's all.

Sorry- I didn't realize you're in Canada (according to your
e-mail address). You might not have 'Home Depot', but I'm
sure there are a fistful of hardware stores where you get
those little rubber seals for a faucet. (or use anything
between the grease gun and the stuffing box- to avoid
having metal on metal- and have the grease squirt out
before it gets into the stuffing box. Of course you might
find a grease nibble- then you're in luck - I never
bothered finding one.

Bless you Wilhelm for sorting out my confusion by clarifying this. I am
going to take apart my stuffing box while the boat is in my driveway and
grease the heck out of it. Cheers, Trevor V2915

no need to grease the heck out of it...hehehe.. as a matter
of fact, clean the stuffing box (no grease inside) and
stick the shaft through- if there is any noticeably gap
between the bushings and the shaft (or sleeve), replace the
bushings- and the 2 seal rings- you'll be safe for many
years to come!

Sorry, Wilhelm, I'm easily confused. Do I remove the shaft to service the stuffing box on the combi? If not, are you saying to clean it, check for gaps, replace if necessary, and then grease the heck out of it? Thanks Trev V2915

yep- that's the only way to check the stern bearing and
stuffing box. (and if necessary to replace the bushings and
seal-rings). And since this is done on the 'dry', check
also all the little 0-rings and change them if needed.
You've got the sleeve and shaft apart, so why not check
everything. It's not that a big job. Once you've done it,
the next time you can do it blind folded- but still with a
lot of sweat!
