Hi Gordon: I read something in the Mainsheet mag. awhile back about only using OEM filters for marine diesels. apparently this was because they had high oil pressure which would blow out the off the shelf brands. Is there any truth to this. Living in Spokane WA. I obviously don’t have any Universal stores nearby. Which brand of filter do you recommend. My engine is a M25XP 21 hp. Thanks for the help. Blow Out

Oil filters have built into them By-pass relief valves to eliminate excessive pressure. The engine would need to have great pressure or the Oil pump pop-off valve stuck to cause the filter to explode due to excessive pressure. Only a portion of the Oil being pumped goes through the filter. It would require a giant filter if all the oil was pumped through it wile operating at higher RPM's. I have been using for some time filters other than Yanmar. Much better price allows me to change filters more often.

Have used many others....

for many years. Have not had any bad experiences & am not concerned..Partly because I only put on approx. 50 hrs/season and believe a if oil filters meet/exceed manufacturers requirements, they must be OK for 50hrs/use.. Secondly, every manufacturer wants to ensure that consumers buy their brand on parts. Some parts I would not substitute, but to me the filter is fair game..

YANMAR ONLY

Just attended the yanmar diesel class where the instructor advised if Yanmar filter not used during a major failure they will not coverunder warranty. He had 2 filters pulled apart and the 2 concerns where durability plus pressure relief valve built into Yanmar filter (Cost $6.52 per filter). I'm convinced now after seeing. USE THE OEM

I used a Fram on my Universal M18...

went to West Marine and found the cross reference. Fram #PH3593A. According to my manual, the M18 and the M25 use the same filter. I now get them at WalMart because they are much cheaper. No problems after 200 hours. Hope this helps.

Yanmar CANNOT deny warranty for filter

Yanmar CANNOT deny warranty service because you used another brand of oil filter, it's the law! The law was put into place to protect from just such a requirement... I forget the name of the law but it's the same law that prevents car manufacturers from voiding your warranty when you take your car to Jiffy Lube or put in aftermarket sparkplugs, etc. The was was designed to protect the consumer from bogus denial of warranty claims and to protect the aftermarket parts manufactures from unfair competition...

Warranty Laws

The previous message on this topic is correct. The consumer warranty law is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (see http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/warranty/undermag.htm). FWIW, the warranty that matters is the one the manufacturer makes when the product is sold - a later change "the warranty" doesn't apply to a prior purchase, even where Magnuson-Moss doesn't cover.
