How much oil should a Yanmar 3GM30F consume in 10 hours of operation at 3000 RPMs? My engine uses about 1/4 to 1/3 of a pint. There is no color to the exhaust and the engine runs fine. Just curious as how much oil a diesel will use under normal conditions. The compression and rings are fine.

In all the years I've had my boat I have never had to add oil. I change it once a season at the end of season with the oil filter. I installed a drain spigot in the oil pan the first year I bought the boat so I'm sure I drain ALL the oil and any debris that might be there. The suction method through the dipstick tube frankly, sucks(pun intended). You never get it all that way.
There's been a great deal of discussion about what weight and type of oil to use. Since the second season I've used full synthetic 5W30. When I remove the valve cover to do valve adjustments the 17 year old engine looks brand new.

None! Our 2GM never used any oil between changes. I have not seen this with our 3JH either.

I use my engine a lot more than most, and do a couple of oil changes per year. ( Sail 12 months a year) Normally will add 1/2 to 3/4 quart between changes. Change oil every 100 hours, or a little less.

We use our sailboat year-round on the West coast of Canada and put on about 30 to 40 hours per year on the good old reliable Yanmar YSM12. She always starts within two seconds (no glow plugs) and does not burn any oil. We change the oil once per year.
My 3gm30f has 800 hours on it. I change the oil every 50 -75 hours. I run it at 2400-2600 rpm cruising. It doesn't burn any oil at all. If you are burning a pint evey 10 hours I would say that there is something going on that needs attention. Unless it has lots of hours and the compression is getting low, it should not burn any oil.
PS; I run my engine at 3000rpm for 5 minutes or so every couple of hours. I think that 3000rpm is a little fast to run constantly. That may be your problem. Try 2500rpm for 10 hours and compare oil use.

there's almost 1,700 hours on the hour meter of my '83 H34's 3GM30F. My surveyor said the meter isn't original so there's probably a good bit more than that. In an average season it runs 60 to 100 hours at a cruising rev of around 2,800 rpm. At the end of the season the cold oil level may be down about a pint using the spec'd 5W30.

There should not be any oil consumption after just 10 hours of operation. I would suspect the oil being used is too thin for the condition of the engine. Diesel engines run hotter and have higher compression than their gasoline counterparts. They require an engine oil that offers improved protection. Some oils are formulated for use in diesel engines but any high quality oil meets all the requisites. If you are using 10W30 I would suggest you go to a full synthetic oil (not blended) and step up to 10W40. The synthetic oil is more resistant to heat.
