I don't have too many gripes with the access to the engine on the 309. I get to most of what I need to, but when changing the oil, it's not possible to actually see the side mounted oil filter. I use a socket type filter wrench, but of course it's done by feel. Because it's side mounted some oil has to leak out of the filter and engine when you remove it.
I like to be able to see the side of the engine so I can be sure to wipe all the oil off it so I don't have a messy, smelly engine.
I lay a small cosmetics mirror down next to the engine, as far aft as it will go, and it allows me a good view of the side of the engine. Now I know that less oil leaks out than I had imagined, and I'm able to see it very clearly and can wipe up any spills.
