Thank you again

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all you again for your responses. My plans are (as suggested) to offer to take over the responsibility of changing the oil and filters. But in the event that strategy fails, I’ve copied all your responses for ammo in defending my concerns. Happy Sailing

What is the name of the device.

Michael: I would be interested in knowing what this device is called and how it is actually hooked up. I had seen something like this many years ago in a JC Whitney catalog or something like that. It would be interesting knowing the mfg. design criteria and thinking for such a device.

Standard automotive store hardware

Steve, As I recall, there’s a 1/4 inch tube that comes from the engine block to the oil pressure sensor. All they did was remove the sensor, install a “T” and replace the sensor. Then a short piece of hose off the “T” with a twist-off valve on the end. Sort of like the shut-off valve they used to put on automobile radiator drains. All of this is standard automotive store hardware. Of course, if the valve opened or the short piece of line burst, you’d lose your oil while underway. I’m going to assume your not considering this for an oil drain system. I wasn’t looking for support for this idea :)

Not ME!

Michael: It is not something that I am interested in. I just thought that I remembered something like this many years ago.

What Would be Cool

If without the engine running you could turn an internal oil punp with a cordless drill. Think about how easy it would be to change the oil that way.

Somebody else does (did) it this way

On some early Farriman Diesel they used a system like this. Entecwest, in Oregon, uses that diesel on their generator. I think they changed the routine for oil change. Cliff

one more issue

I am surprised that no one has mentioned yet the psi on the oil pump: the pressure is way higher than on automobile-type pumps. That is why auto-type oil filters ruin Yanmars, they can't handle the high pressure oil pump. Yanmar oil filters are on the high side of the system, not the low, like cars. So get ready to be bathed in oil yourself, if you are not careful. regards, joe

I spoke to a Yanmar Rep and in no way would he recommend using this method to drain oil out of your engine. You may save a couple of dollars now, but you will pay about $7,000 when you have to buy a new engine.
