Dip STick

I've found the dipstick tube suction method best if you don't have a "special" drain plug fitting.

Dip Stick Works Fine

I have a 1989 Hunter 30 with an 18hp Yanmar. I've changed the oil many times and have always pumped the oil out of the dip stick tube. West Marine sells a great self priming and self contained pump that really works great (about $45).

Could you be more specific about which suction pump from WM? Make , model, etc. Thanks.

Must do three things to change 2GM20F oil

Rudy: I have a 87H285 with 18 hp Yanmar 2GM20F, which sounds like the same engine as you have. 1) The first rule for changing oil is to make sure it's HOT. Syrupy oil takes a LONG time to pump or vacuum out. 2) I use a vacuum can. The tube goes down the oilstick hole, you clamp the tube while pumping to build a vacuum, release the clamp, and then adjust the tube up or down a little so that it freely sucks the oil up (too far down and the tube will either be flat against the bottom of the oil pan, or bend & curl back up). 3) For the oil filter, because I have restricted access to it and cannot use a conventional filter wrench, I use what looks like a big socket head that fits onto a ratchet wrench. I don't know the exact size, but it's a metric dimension, not English. BTW, I'm planning a cruise to Key West in January (from Ft.Lauderdale), and was planning on a stop in Islamorada. Any suggestions for marinas or anchorages or things to do there? Eric Lorgus s/v Explorer

No Problem

Stephen, I'll check the name/model and get it to you by this weekend. E-mail me at aeland@home.com and give me your e-mail address. Thanks. Alan

dip tube oil changing

A friend who has gotten out of the boat business recently gave me a Topside oil changer which is just a tank with a vacuum pump to which is affixed a valve and a long thin tube small enough to go down the dip tube, (or down into the transmission). It works great and has made a really nasty job comparatively antiseptic. A piece of copper tubing small enough to go down the dip tube is used at the end of the hose which will assure that the bottom of the takeup is on the bottom of the oil pan, something not possible with a flexible hose.

Plantation yatch harbor is the best all around to stay in. If you are going down the intracoastal it's between channel marker 78 and 78a good luck

This really is Topsider

The link I posted didn't work for whatever reason. To see the item go to www.westmarine.com and then search for Topsider, there should be a listing under oil change equipment.
