Oil Change Pump Recommendations

Just finished winterizing ... Bought a manual dip stick tube oil change pump as time was short ... it worked okay but not great. Have Yanmar 3JH5E engine. Miss my Reverso system but think that might be overkill ... any recommendations on a good (and neat) oil change system?

What kind ?

I've used a Pela 650 vacuum oil extractor for 17 years and it does a quick removal if you warm the oil before pumping. The only drawback is the obscene price.

I have borrowed one of the Pela extractors from a guy at the lake. Worked great and when I buy one, that will be the one.

I concur. There are a few extractors that work like the Pela and they work very well and are handy and not messy. Not only do I have a sailboat with a single inboard where the oil amount is not very big, I also have a larger power boat with much larger twin diesel inboards and that type of oil extractor is what I use on them.

:plus: on the extractor. Only issue is the plastic hose is a bit short and required an extension to reach the oil sump. It did a great job sucking the oil up and into the tank. But my helper was a bit careless in handling the extension and it popped out of the rubber cork connection. Drops of oil flew as the hose sprung loose. PIA. I need to get a longer hose, or plan on drops of oil being flung about the cabin as I put the great tools away.

I would much rather have a system that replaces the drain plug and pumps the oil to a container. I'm not convinced that sucking it out from the top, even with everything theoretically in suspension, does as good a job. But like you guys, for 2 qts of oil is it worth it?
Practical Sailor had an article on doing this. Sounds like the fittings can be hard to match up though.

@jssailem - give them a call or email them (Pela). They have a longer hose available. I think it under $15. For some jobs the shorter (and stiffer) hose is better, but for extracting the last bit of oil from my Perkins, the longer hose is a must.

Funny you should ask....
I have the very same engine, in the very same boat.
Always used a mechanical pump in my previous boat, but bought a suction type for the 385.
Modified the suction tube to fit tightly over the mouth of the dipstick tube. Dont use that ridiculous 1/64" id tube that comes with the extractor. After an engine warm up, its very easy to extract nearly all oil. The extractor used to be called something else.

I use this small pump.

3 seasons now for both Volvo Penta and Yanmar diesels using this pump.

The difference is that this actually pumps the oil and not air.

We like it because we can watch and measure the oil as it is removed and put in re-used milk or bleach gallon jugs for measurement and proper disposal.

The key to "dip stick" removal is cutting the tube to fit the exact length needed and the end to be cut on ≈60° angle. This allow the tube to be close to the bottom of oil sump as practical without tubing "curl".

I am a "cold oil" fan, since all of the oil has gravity drained to maximum to the sump.

I also examine the oil filter draining separately and compare to see if I have salt crystals in that oil. This is a hint of Riser problems if salt is found. I can simply test that oil for salt... but that is another story.

My son-in-law (had his own boat service company) helps do all of the spring servicing and actually prefers this pump over ≈8 different ones he has used.

I forget which one or the name but got one at walmart and it worked real good and comes with a long hose for in the dip stick.
I did have 2 -12 volt electric pumps a few years back and they were not cheap but both 12 volt pump died and never again for sure.

We have a Moeller unit - looks just like Ralph's PELA. Only problem in 10 years was this fall when some crud got into the check valve at the bottom of the container. Disassembled & cleaned... good as new now.

Nah...I've used this pump for diesel tank, lawn mower, bilge cleanup... Even sucked out the dishwasher when the pump crapped out (the admiral was out at the time -mum's the word mates!) so ended up with a 1/2 of crud at the bottom. BTW Moeller wouldn't help. Warranty is 1 year- too bad. I got the last laugh tho:dancing:
