We finally tracked down all of the hidden screws that attached the bulkheads to the house. It wasn't easy....

Here you can see the house sitting on it's rods.

Here's a picture of the bare foredeck.

The house front.

Here are some shots of bulkhead attachment points.

A hollow header used for a wire run.

My Sonicrafter threw it's washer and bolt so we had to go ahead and pull the tank early to find it. The tank had a pipe leading into it that had been repaired with a giant glob of JB Weld or something and had been leaking.

Tank bed.

Rot on the lower hanging locker bulkhead from the water.

The house is a disaster now and will look worse before she's done.

Now I've gotta figure out how to get the house on the ground without tearing it up.

Is it really necessary to move the house completely off the deck? BTW, she really looks to be in pretty good shape. There used to be a caulk / isolator which I used to bed frames et al where thy attached to another piece. It had a fungicide in it too and was a great product. As I recall it was Dolfinite or something similar.

I've heard of that. Don't know if it's still available or not. We discussed whether to move the house or not. it'd give us more light and make it easier to work on the interior and the house both if we did.

Great photos

Wow, what a project, I have been following you here on it. I am curious though, and maybe you have explained it before but: what propted you to do a project like this? Have you owned it for years? did you get it free? what kind of value does it have? How much will the investent be?
The main this is that you enjoy doing it I guess.
Keep up the good work and pictures. Dean

Ever try you tube, a walk around video would be cool.

I bought her for twenty dollars USD in September of 2007 and sailed her home through a Force 11 storm. Not exactly what I had in mind but her seakeeping abilities won me over immediately. I then sailed her until August of '08 when the Perkins blew, pulled her for a refit and found some issues. The more I found, the deeper I went.

Here are a couple of youtube vids:

and one of the haulout, if ya have the 8 minutes to watch:

Considering she would cost 350K to build new and will be basically new when I finish, she should be worth about 75K when completed. We're gonna sail out the Strait and turn left in a couple of years so I intend to enjoy her afterwards. In materials, including the engine, the investment oughta be in the 15K range, not counting labor or the building. I figure the cost of the shop is about 120% of the cost to moor her anyway and is a wash. The labor is volunteer for the most part as we're keeping it in the family or have folks who volunteer their expertise for sailing time later.

could you use a motor lift to lift and move the house?
one of my neighbors has one that he uses to lift the motor out of his cigarette boat
maybe you know someone with one too?

I've got one and there's no way to use it up on the boat. Nothing to sit on and the reach to the CG is too far. I may strap some 4X4's to the bottom of the house and slide it over the side using pulleys.

Charlie, barn door track and trolleys will carry a much heavier load than the house. If you run a track down the center lin of the boat on the rafters you will be able to shuttle the house around as you need to. It will be easier to lower the house to the ground than it will be to put it back up.

There are light fixtures and an anti-condensation rig on the ceiling. It makes it tough to hang anything from there. The building used to be a floating boathouse until it ran into a bridge during a storm so it's built kinda light. I'm not sure what the structure will support.

could you build some sort of "sled on wheels" out of 2x4s?
so instead of lowering it to the floor you "just" roll it out of the way
no idea how much the house weights and no clue on dimensions either but would that be an option? just a thought

It'd be tough to roll anything across the deck beams since the decking is off. It weighs around 600 Lbs give or take. Once we get it down, we can throw it on a mast cart and move it to the stands.

Erect a scaffold with wheels along side of the boat then slide the house to the scaffold and wheel it out of your way if you have the room along side....just a thought from looking at the pics

RAD, there's not enough room due to the midship jack-stand. I may build a rack level with the deck aft and slide it over on that if there's room using bridge timbers.

blowinganddrifting, glad ya like 'em. My only gripe is that they're too short and the camera has no stabilization. It's a cheap little Flip Video camera. I got it because of the price. If the sea eats it, no biggie. It'll be a while before there are more videos...

House movers use Ivory brand bar soap(you can wash it away with water) for lubricating the beams that they use to move houses. A set of timbers for tracks and cross beams to support the house and you ought to be able to move the deck house around as you need.
