Oh Joy and Lady J are now roomates

Ok, busy, busy day. We pick up a Kettenburg K-40 and moved the boats into the new building so now the Lady J and Oh Joy are roomies. I must say, the Lady J looked good in the sunshine and this was the first time I've seen the entire boat since she went in but I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

So, there ya have it. The girls are sharing a house until at least April.

It might still considering that the K-40 sharing the house was originally christened as "TomboyII" after Paul Kettenburg's Son Tom.

Speaking of dinghies, I've decided that Seasmoke's dinghy will be named Festus. It's only fitting....

Charlie, there is something wrong! provisioning for three days on a Catalina 22 has stirred up more discussion than Matt Dillon's boat and the progress on The Lady J and the O-Joy.

That doesn't surprise me Ross. More folks on this site can relate to a Catalina 22 than these old classics I work on and write about. Most sailors have never sailed aboard a wooden yacht and have no clue of the differences. More's the pity....

You are so right. I grew up sailing wooden boats and the one I had for 19 years was wood, all be it light displacement and FRP sheathed. There is a big difference in how they smell, sound and move. Personally, I love a wood boat; just too old and poor to maintain one the size I use now. I even like a wood mast and boom!

Bietzpadlin has a wooden interior with a fiber glass hull and deck. Bald cypress was used for the bulkheads and all of the cabin furniture. There is a little plywood where it doesn't show.

Now what is this about "Seasmoke", what did I miss? Many years ago while in Maui I went diving off of a 50+' cat. We were told it was originally named "Seasmoke" and raced by Arness. Was somebody blowing smoke? I guess I missed a history lesson. Please enlighten me. In case nobody said it, the boat is gorgeous!

Seasmoke is Kettenburg K-40 hull #3 and Arness first boat. He traded her in for K-50 hull #1 named Seasmoke II. I also heard he later had a cat named Seasmoke but don't know for sure. The K-40, now named Ianne, was in trouble from the owner wanting to bail and have her cut up. I talked to him yesterday and if I hadn't agreed to take her, she would've been in a dumpster today. Which boat? Seasmoke? Lady J? Ya know, what you see done so far on the Lady J amounts to 52K, including storage, materials, labor, etc. and will top out at 75K with new plumbing, electrical, tankage plumbing, engine plumbing and wiring etc.. Someone's gonna be very happy with Seasmoke next year.... Considering it would cost over 400K to build one of these, having us restore one for you for one fifth of that's a pretty good deal. I'm actively looking and hoping somebody out there will see it that way.
