Offshore sailing from Chesapeake bay to St. Thomas in winter

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the offshore jump from Chesapeake Bay(or anywhere on east coast) to the Caribbean during the winter. Planning to go late January/Early February. I would be part of the crew on this trip, not captain. Boat is a 2006 Beneteau 433. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this route during the winter and open to suggestions.

I’ve never done that trip but wouldn’t try it that time of year. Will be watching this thread. Good luck.

Note that all of Don Street’s recommendations say to leave in November. When the Christmas winds pick up in late December it makes it a lot tougher. We went from Marathon, Florida in January 2013 through the Bahamas and waited there until Chris Parker said the winds would be light for several days. Coming from further north you can go East easier before turning south as shown in the article, like we did with the Salty Dawg Rally in November 2013. I wouldn’t make the trip without using Chris Parker for weather and routing advice.

I echo Phantom154's advice. We used Chris Parker on a delivery from Chesapeake Bay to the Bahamas in mid-November one year. He gave us an accurate window, entry and exit points for the Gulf Stream that were extremely helpful, and updated us throughout the trip.
