Can anyone recommend the best offshore sailing text. Making my first offshore passage this coming summer from VA to Bermuda and although I'm crewing for experienced sailors, I'd like to do my homework. Yes, I do have coastal cruising experience. Thanks.

A couple of suggestions

Sensible Cruising:The Thoreau Approach Don Casey and Lew Hackler The Voyager's Handbook Beth Leonard Both good, easy reads with lots of common sense material.

Larry's Suggestions are about cruising

I have read both books and they are good reads. But Chapman's might be better. Storm tactics depend upon the boat. Things that work on a heavy full keel boat probably won't work on a lighter fin keeled boat. Go to amazon.com or some other book seller and do a keyword search and take your pick. I really liked "sensible cruising" but it really is more about picking a boat and the practical and philosopical aspects of cruising. They advocate go simple, go now. the voyagers handbook is a simular book except it is more for someone who is planning to circumnavigate. They would have little to offer someone who is crewing on a passage for a few days. IMHO

I would read Heavy Weather sailing by

Bruce and Coles and Storm Tactics by Larry Pardey and Sailing in Windy Weather by Henderson.

Hal Roth

Try Hal Roth's "How to Sail Around the World." Excellent book.

I think that Hal Roth has sailed three times

around alone in races with stops in several places to refit and reprovision.
