I'm about to do my first offshore passage and have been talking to alot of veterans. One question that came up that I have not found answered is:

I'll be flying to Bermuda to pick up my ride. I want to take a PFD and tether with me. Will TSA of airlines allow the PFD CO2 cartridge aboard with carry on sea bag?

go to the airline web site and get the truth, not "IIRC" opinions.

No matter what the website says, I have heard of local TSA agents confiscating these. Disarm it and buy a new cartridge in Bermuda.

When I flew to Bermuda to join a friend aboard his boat I printed out the webpages which said that cylinders could be carried on the flight, but they were confiscated anyway. The replacements in Bermuda were expensive, and we had to travel to a chandlery in Hamilton, which is some distance from where we were moored in St George.

And depending on the brand of PFD the cartridge might not be available. I made the mistake of testing all three crew PFDs after we arrived in FL. Two of three worked, mine being the failing item. But I was shocked by the cost to put three PFDs back online. One cartridge was a special order.

Haven't flown into Bermuda, but I have never had a problem packing my inflatable PFD into checked bags. The inspectors frequently leave me a note telling me they've opened my bags - so I know they see it, 31gr. CO2 cyl and all.

TSA allows the cylinders, but each airline might prohibit them. Go to your airline's website and check their policy.

I'd think the skipper should have or be able to obtain one?

ValuJet, and Sabretech (SabreLine) improperly stowed 80 cu.ft. oxygen generator cylinders. Boom! Nothing to do with PFD CO2 cyls.

From the OPO website:
TSA PERMITS CO2 CYLINDERS

In 2006, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States permitted CO2 Cylinders With an Inflatable PFD to pass through their security checkpoints, only to reverse that decision roughly 45 days later when the liquids and gels terrorist plot broke open. Effective August 4, 2007, the TSA again permits the CO2 cylinders with an Inflatable PFD through their security checkpoints. The permission process this time went through the White House and Congress. It is expected that this approval will stay in place much longer due to a much broader approval process. TSA Screeners across the United States have been trained already and are prepared to let these through. Look under "Disabling Chemicals & Other Dangerous Items" for specifics: http://tinyurl.com/ptxdw Remember though, it is still each airlines choice whether to allow these on their airplanes and each sets their own policies (roughly 1/2 allow them and 1/2 don't). Check with your airline (and connecting or return flights) or their websites to make sure they allow them before you travel.

The valuejet crash was caused by some expired chemical oxygen generators ( the same kind used to supply those drop down masks ) not a 30 gram Co2 cylinder.

Went to TSA website and they don't allow with carry on. I won't be checking any baggage - trust issue with airlines! The skipper has extra he will let me use. Thanks for all the input.
