Offshore NJ Blasting

Rutgers University is heading up a research project to explore the ocean floor and will consist of blasting noise into the ocean seabed. Please consider looking into this and sign the petition to stop this. Many think it is a ruse to set the stage for oil drilling off the coast. Thanks.

And drilling for oil is inherently bad?
Well, Yeah. Wouldn't want to get more boats out on the water made from fiberglass, would we? Don't need more kevlar sails cluttering up the skyline. And I'm really tired of seeing sailboats burning all that dammed diesel fuel. :stirthepot:

We need a tongue-in-cheek smiley. :D

They look like employment. Let's block the windmill farms while we're at it. Nevermind the hypocrisy.

Those rigs look pretty big, probably well lighted and even updated to charts.
I'm guessing they would be pretty easy to not hit.

I guess my post was poorly written because I surely didn't mean it the way it was received. I do not plan on driving to the marina with a wind powered car. I am in favor of a sane energy policy that includes the Keystone Pipeline and exploration and production to make us independent from foreign oil as much as possible. The sarcasm is that Rutgers is such a far left leaning institution (think Condoleezza Rice) it seems hypocritical that they would be sponsoring this project that could upset the flora and fauna of the sea.

Lehigh, I think you might need to back out of this as your only adding to the negative interpretations that may result. Chief

What, exactly, are they doing this for??? So far, it's just insinuation that oil companies will find something useful from the study. Somehow, I doubt that the US Dept of Interior, under the current regime, is interested in exploring for oil.

Was there a sentence buried in there about something as innocuous as a sea level study? Yes, the National Science Foundation awarded the money based on an application that makes this case.

Sadly, I'd guess that this is really just about lining the pockets of educrats at the expense of the taxpayer. The Rutgers President has his prestigious position because he is very adept at raising vast sums of money, both from the government and the private sector (pharmacies are the big target in NJ), for the benefit of the University.

I doubt there is any reason for people to get their underwear bunched over potential oil rigs. Rutgers just wants the millions that they get for another useless study funded by you-know-who. In case anybody has any misconceptions about the noble people who run our sainted institutions of higher learning ... it's always about the money. While they pontificate about the quest for knowledge, social justice, environmental preservation, yada, yada, yada, they are mainly interested in lining their pockets, living a country club lifestyle, building beautiful edifices for themselves, job security, full benes (yes, healthcare and pensions that most of us can only dream about) ... and having it all on the backs of government grants, alumni endowments, and most of all, the exploding crisis of student debt.

Don't worry, it's just crony capitalism (don't mistake that for free-market capitalism) in all it's glory.

Point of clarity, Keystone doesn't do much to increase independence from foreign oil...

I am no rocket scientist, just a sailor in these waters. Research is very important about our ecology, minerals , oil , whatever.. but wtf blasting sound waves at the ocean bottem
every 5 seconds for 24 hours. There won't be a dolphin within 100 miles with blown ear drums. Someones pockets are getting lined. We are far more advanced in seismic study and geology then this. I Signed It.
