Offshore cruising with an Albin

Hi all Albin owners,

I've just bought a wonderfull Albin a few weeks ago from Ed
(SaylerEd@...) who is a member of this group. Vesper has been
wonderfully maintained and loved for many years by Ed.... and he is
now helping me to prepare "Vesper" for her a new adventure. I have
great plans for Vesper ! Put shortly: I'm leaving for 6 months,
singlehanded, from Mystic,CT to Seaward,Alaska by the Panama canal...

So, Vesper has to be ready for the long run...

I would like to know what other owners has done regarding the
following points:

-I'm about to add a third battery (2 for servicing, 1 for engine).
Any suggestion where to put this third one. (Vesper has an inboard
Volvo, with the fuel tank in the bilge);

- I need a Windvane for self-steering. I've seen in the poll the the
Navik is used by 5 owners. Any comments or suggestions? Which one
would you install?

-I've dissassembled the headstay chainplate for inspection. 1) the
thru bolts were bent (~15 degrees), 2) there is only two small welds
holding the headstay plate. Does anybody has made modification to
this piece of stainless steel so it is stronger? I'm a bit concerned
to be in the middle of nowhere with those small 3/4" long welds
holding my mast...

-I want to install an anchor roller at the bow to secure the anchor.
Does anyone ahs done something similar? Pictures?

-There is only the 65L (~18 g) tank in the bow for water. Want to
increase the capacity. Does anyone has more than 1 tank for
water...where?

That will be enough questions for now (and enough work..!)

Thanks for your help.

Patrick: I am a new member of the club ant as yet have not found my Vega, so I have no input on your preperations but I do live in Cabo San Lucas Mexico so when you reach this area on your adventure please drop in and visit. I have a home here and in La Paz Mex. and many contacts in the area and would look forward to any assistance I may be able to provide to you or any other Albin owner.

Hi

Congratulations on buying Vesper, you will not be disappointed.

In the UK we all use anchors from the bow of the boat, unlike the Scandanavians and as such most have forward bow rollers. We have now designed and made many Double Bow Rollers with intergrated forestay chainplate that makes it much, much stronger. I made this as I lost my mast in light winds due to the small weld failing on the chainplate. We have the Bow Rollers in stock (£195) and I can send a phot if you wish. Made from 5mm and 6mm stainless 316 so much tougher, you could pick the Vega up with the fitting!

I have a third Battery which I keep in the starboard locker. Make sure it is fitted snugly and cant fall out on a capsize!

The windvane I have fitted is teh Navik and many in the UK have fitted this type. Easy to install, works fantastic. Vega "Lorna Doone" circumnavigated with one, Rough Diamond circumnaviagted the UK two years ago with one and the owner "Keith Patrick" stated it was the most important piece of gear on board.

I have seen plastic bag type water tanks underneath the bunks. Seems a good idea but I have no experience as I keep my offshore sailing to a couple of days!

Hope this helps. Good luck. Fair winds and tides....

Lorna Doone sailed around the world with multiple heavy duty plastic
water containers. (From 5 gallon to 1 quart containers) The thought
here is that water must sometimes be transported by dingy and multiple
containers are easier to store as required.

This system would also allow keeping suspect water separated for cooking
purposes only.

It is with some sadness and some joy to let you know that Lorna Doone
has a new owner. The joy is that I know that the new owner Frank Mackay
of Valley View, Alberta will be a very good Vega owner and treat Lorna
Doone with the same respect and care that her previous owners have
treated her to. I'm sure that Frank will become an active member of the
Vega family. Lorna Doone will continued to be moored at Oak Bay Marina
in Victoria, BC.

Thanks to all of the Vega owners who have made owning a Vega such a
wonderful experience.

Have a nice day,

"Tarka the Otter" is equipped with a Navik. Nick Coughlan, the
previous owner, says it worked great save for losing the paddle in
the Indian Ocean.

He also mentioned that water was one of the problems with long
distance cruising on the Vega. He tried flexible tanks but had
problems with abrasion. I am going to install plywood tanks under the
cockpit. They will have about 15 gallons each. As the new Beta engine
weighs 150 lbs less the trim of the boat should not change much. (I
will put on my web site the installation process.) It will appear to
be a floor in the lazarette.

I will look a the stem fitting. I am considering what to do about a
bow roller as well. I will check the welds.

Lorne, Welcome to the group. Our boat Lyric is currently on the hard at
Astilleros next to Marina Palmira in La Paz. We expect to be down in mid
November to try and move her up to San Carlos.
If you want to talk Vega's lets get together while we are down.
Patrick, consider a water maker. We used ours extensively and ran it off of
solar panels if the motor wasn't running. Wouldn't go anywhere without one.

I got one of Steves rollers and am very happy with it. It went on
easy, looks great and is much nicer than the old set-up. You will not
be disapointed with it. Money well spent !
