By way of New Year's resolution I promised (threatened?) to start this thread, or rather series of threads, to help owners of medium light cruisers/racers such as many of the larger Hunters, Catalinas, Beneteaus, Jeanneaus, etc. decide what areas of their vessel they might want to examine carefully and possibly modify or reinforce before making longer offshore or bluewater passages. Potential buyers of these types of vessels might be interested as well, of course. For the purpose of this discussion I have decided to define offshore as out of range of VHF but within helicopter rescue range, typically about 25 - 250 NM (500 NM with advanced refueling, if I understand well) and blue water as anything beyond helicopter rescue range. Since we are talking about medium-light designs and I don't think it makes much sense to rebuild our vessels from the ground up I automatically limit my own thinking of bluewater cruising to the Tradewind belts, with relatively short forays in to the Variables. No higher latitude cruising. No cruising in the hurricane season. The objective of these threads is TO COVER ONLY THESE TOPICS that discuss specific (real or perceived) shortcomings of the above, relatively lightly built vessels for offshore and bluewater cruising, not to rewrite the general handbooks on these topics. Obviously, the first task is to identify these special areas. I have tried to attach a draft list below in the hope that we can perhaps reach agreement on these subtopics before I try to start off the first technical discussions. Finally, the idea is certainly not to start a monologue - I don't pretend to have all the answers - but rather to initiate a lively discussion. Then, if Phil will promise not to loose these threads too soon, we can all refer aspiring new cruisers and buyers to these discussions, thereby saving everyone a lot of time. One thing I cannot promise is to keep my posts short (it takes far less time to write long ones ;-)) Flying Dutchman "Rivendel II" (Legend 43, hull #1) Topics to be covered: (1) Rigging and Sailplans (2) Rudders, autopilots, windvanes (3) Anchoring, mooring, berthing (4) Decks, windows, hatches (5) Seaberths, floorboards, doors (6) Heavy weather and survival tactics (7) Miscelaneous

Opinions need be.....

I urge those who participate in this thread to be though provoking, but kind in their comments for we all know that opinions are like ........ everybody's got one. I look forward to Henk's comments as he has more bluwater miles under his keel that anyone else here on this site that I know. I think it can be a great learning experience if it doen't degenerate into the mess like the guns on board thread did. Some of those respondents couldn't be Hunter, Beneteau or Catalina owners since too much of the time was spent spewing retoric and not enough concentrating on specific boating issues. Please provoke thought, discussion, and debate with civility - that's what made this site different from all the Cruising Bulletin boards where everyone frags everyone and no one uses their real names, and everyone is an expert on cruising but never does it. Just my 2 cents, and I look forward to the thread. Bob Knott H380

Looking frorward to this thread

Henk, I am really looking forward to this on-going dialogue. I currently have a Beneteau 361 and am planning on leaving to go cruising in about two years. I am starting to get the boat ready so this will be a big help. i hope to be able to contribute as I move along with my preperations. Thanks for starting this!!!!! thanks for starting this thread...

henk, since many people may not know of your extensive bluewater experience, i suggest that you summarize your adventures over the last several years...thanks again for sharing..

Henk, you might want to add...

A subsection on something like "Engine/Electrical/Power Generation"? Or are you thinking of just structural issues? I too am looking forward to this thread, anyone with a home port of Vanuatu can share some good info on offshore prep!

Henk,

Let's get started. What would you look for in the rigging and sail plan? r.w.landau

Henk, Great idea, But might I add another category

which I think would tend to be *very* important. 7) Cockpit Prep/Layout I guess it could go under decks or miscellaneous. But being as most people would be spending a majority of their time out there I think it would warrant its own category..... Some sub topics could be where/how to secure harness tethers, life-line stanchion re-enforcement, canvass/dodger, open transom vs closed issues, any recommended alterations, emergency gear, etc.....

Thanks for the encouragements!

I will try to start the rigging and sailplan thread tonight. Meanwhile, let us use this thread to add new topics. However, I would like to repeat again that it was not my intention to cover offshore/bluewater preparation in general (because it would take too long and there are excellent books) but rather to focus on the special preparation necessary to make larger medium-light cruiser/racers ready for this kind of sailing. After all, unlike a Hans Christian, Tayana, Westsail etc. our boats were not specifically built for that purpose. Flying Dutchman

Some individual replies

I just posted the first topic-specific thread and expect that I will be unable to keep participating in some of the discussions it might generate because of lack of time. However, let me at least try to keep answering some of the questions and suggestions on this general thread. Joe: A thread is just a series of posts responding to the original poster, right here and now (no need to go anywhere else). Miles

Just a note to Phil: This "thread" might very well deserve to be its own forum.

Own Forum

We are starting to get our Passage 42 ready to leave in a couple years. I also think alot of good info could be gained but have a forum where people could talk about getting their boats ready to go offshore. There are better boats that one could buy to offshore but the price of those boats would keep most of us from ever doing it.
