i'm looking at boats between 77-84 i have seen quite a few in my price range. i have also seen 2 dif draft lengths. Which handles better the 2'11" or the 3'11" is it noticable. does it affect the capsize ratio?

No capsize ratio

Shorter draft allows you to go closer to shore, but causes the boat to sideslip more than the longer draft. It's a tossup.

Capsize ratio

The capsize ratio is very theoretical at best and is probably overblown since it does not take into consideration captains ability, sail area flown for a given condition and many other factors. The 25 should be stable enough for any type of sailing you should be considering for this model unless you are way off the chart in your expectations. The other poster was right , if you want to race and go to windward then a deep keel is best, if you want to gunkhole then a shoal draft is better. Actually there are minimal differences so I would consider the best value as the deciding factor.

Draft does not effect capsize screen

which is calculated from the beam and displacement. It is a valuable indicator of survivability in a blue water storm with breaking waves large enough to capsize the boat. It actually screens the boats ability to recover from a capsize in those conditions. This is not very relevant for the majority of use who are coastal cruisers, able to find a port if things start to get really bad, and probably in waters that do not generate breaking waves over 10 feet. As it happens, the Cherubini designs Hunter used in its first 8-9 years gives them "blue water" capsize screens below 2. For instance, the 25 footer has a capsize screen of 1.95. Any of Hunters keel models will take very good care of you in coastal waters regardless of their capsize screens. And all of them would recover quickly from a knockdown from high winds which is about the worst you can expect in those waters. Go see the boats - pick one you like, get a good survey, and enjoy it!
