Was wondering if anyone has sailed through Off Shore Sailing. Thinking of going there to get bareboat certified. Thanks for any input.

Took their course in 2003

I did a five day course in Captiva (Ft Myers area) in 2003 and got certified for basic keelboat, basic cruising and bareboat cruising in one deal. I found the instruction to be very good and the facilities excellent, but pricey. (This was before Captiva was devastated by a hurricane - I don't know if they still run that facility). OffShore follows the US Sailing program, which differs slightly from the American Sailing Assoc. program - amazingly enough the two do not recognize each other's certification, so when you start with one, you pretty much have to stick with it. I believe that there are more ASA schools than US ones, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I would grade the materials as very good, the instruction as excellent, the boat used as good to very good - it was a pretty new Hunter 40 - and the amount of on the water time as fair to good. There was more classroom time than I wanted, and less sailing. I think OffShore is a bit more expensive than some of the others.

Consider Maryland School of Sailing & Seamanship

I am sure that Off Shore Sailing is fine school but having never taken any courses from them can offer no personal perspective. However, I have taken courses from Maryland School of Sailing & Seamanship and Annapolis Sailing School with Maryland School of Sailing & Seamanship being my preferred school. I strongly recommend Maryland School of Sailing & Seamanship courses, instructors, and focus on developing solid sailing skills... They are an ASA school and offer courses on the Chesapeake Bay, Florida, Caribbean, New England, & Pacific NW. Oh yea and in the Atlantic Ocean. Their fleet is made up of Island Packet sailboats ranging from 32 – 45 feet. All of their instructors are outstanding but Tom Tursi is fantastic. http://www.mdschool.com/index.htm Below is summary of one of my experiences with them. http://www.sailingseadragon.com/NorfolkBermuda.htm Good luck
