Has anyone installed a Zephyr Saildrive on an E25, or any Ericson, for that matter. I've got one and want to put it in my boat. I can use any and all help. Thanks. Mark

Saildrive bladder

Mr Mark, Ever seen that 50' spring tide up there? OMC, Volvo et al saildrives are pretty basic. Just about like sticking an outboard into a well, with the very real difference of having a huge hole in the aft section of the vessel. The important part is to get the bladder, boot, bellows in correctly buy a new one for good peace of mind here. Check a shop manual for the procedure, not that expensive to have a pro do it, some yard mechanics do moonlight jobs for cash...;-)

Thanks

Thanks. Those big tides on the Bay of Fundy are spectacular. The sea bed is exposed and it's quite a sight. The smell is a different story. The best thing to do is take a Zodiac ride on the Shubenaccadie River, it flows into the Bay of Fundy and when the tide is coming in and the river is flowing into the bay a "tidal bore" is formed. a rolling wave that you can travel over. It's an adventure. It's also a little wet but they give you foul weather gear. Cheers. Mark

Mark- Do you have the E-25CB or the 25+? I have a E25CB 1973 and I cant see anyway or how you could intstall a saildrive on one. If you have a plan to install please let me know. I would love to install one too. Thanks Rob Hessenius

For Rob

Hi Rob, I'm in Illinois today, Arkanssas on Sat. Tulsa on Sunday and Lexington on Monday. Tuesday I go to Chicago, Weds. back to Lexington. So.....No, I don't have a plan to install my saildrive. The editor of Good Old Boat Magazine said it would work. I trust him. When (maybe if) I install it I'll take pictures and measurements and send them on to you. Cheers. Mark

Saw one

A couple of years ago I looked at an E25+ that was up for auction on eBay and happened to be near me. It had the optional saildrive unit with the OMC powerhead. I did some research and learned as much as I could in a couple of days, as I was somewhat interested in the boat. Much of the feedback concerned corrosion problems with the lower unit, which is aluminum alloy. Two factors that would keep me from doing such an installation are the increased drag (you are pushing the entire lower unit through the water all the time - like having your outboard down) and the seriousness of having the seal let go. It is of the accordion/bellows type and should be replaced at regular intervals. It is necessary to cut a fairly large hole in the hull to mount this setup, and the work must be top notch so as to preclude any chance of a leak or other problems. Some guys like 'em, but I decided I would much prefer the other alternatives.
