Today I detected a odor in the stern locker where the batteries are strapped down. In this locker there is a pump. This pump has pumped evil smelling fluid into the locker and I have cleaned it as well as I can. I have left the locker open tonight hoping that it will air out. I am afraid that the waste has dripped down into the lower part of the hull and will continue to smell. Can I rinse this locker and pump it out somehow? Also, I have disconnected the bateries and am afraid to reconnect incorrectly. Any diagram would help.

Fabreeze

There's a new product on the retail market this year called Fabreeze. Available in grocery & department stores. Spray it in the affected area and see what happens. It works every where else. Great for getting rid of that "boat" smell from cushions, matresses, etc.

Try cleaning out the locker.

Not just throwing some bleach or Febreeze or whatever in it, but actually CLEANING it...adding detergent, water, scrubbing (or agitating) and then...<gasp>...thoroughly hosing ALL the dirty, soapy water out. Doesn't matter if the locker is inaccessible...there are limber holes that will allow a transfer of both the soapy water and the rinse cycle. THEN leave it open to air out. WhyIZit! that so many people who'd never think of just hoping a stinky potful (sinkful, tubful) of rank stagnant water that's bred new life forms will somehow magically clean itself if left alone long enough at home think it will on a boat???

Fabreeze Too

I read about Fabreeze in a recent Consumer's Report. The product was rated as a good household freshener for soiled curtains, carpets, furniture etc. They claimed that the effects lasted a couple of weeks. I tried it on the carpet lining on my 1988 33.5 and it worked well. Unfortunately, it only corrects the problem temporarily. The carpeting really needs to be cleaned with a vacuum carpet / upholstery machine. I intend to clean it thoroughly this fall after the temperatures moderate.
