odor removal

A while back someone mentioned a product that would kill mold and mildew. I think they said it could be sprayed on. I have been having a problem with an odor in my boat since Katrina. It's been in the yard for two months now and is just now being cleaned inside. The yard first said that the foam in my cushions needed replacing to the tune of 650.00. Now they say the carpet headliner needs replacing to the tune of about 2000.00. That seems a bit extreme. It doesn't really look bad but there is an odor in the cabin of my H31. Any suggestions?

mildrew remover is very good. Smells strong, so have good ventiliation, but spray it on, leave it for 10 mins or so and wipe it off. I use it on everything and so far it hasn't bleached out anything - just a little on a bedspread. I used a ton of it on my former H31 with the carpet headliner. Using a "Little Green" portable carpet shampooer I'd spay it on, and on, and on.

Same Boat/ Same Problems on and on

I was feeling fine for you until you said H31. A real stinkin mess this boat. We had the same H31 smell for years. Tried every cleaner under the sun. Most of my marina time was trying to kill the smell! A real embarasment with friends and dock neighbors. Finally had to get rid of the boat at a big $$$$loss. We just could not stand it any more. Under the floor something evil grows. You can kill it temporally although after you have been closed up a few weeks, it comes back again and again. I really think the floor sole needs to be ripped up, all the slop below the floor killed and replace the floor with somekind of plastic panel. check the archive, the H31 is a ordor topic. we moved up to a H336. No smells, nein.

Raritan K.O.

Yes, it's actually a holding tank product...but it's live bacteria that "eat" odor-causing bacteria and spores. Remove the covers from your cushions, spray them on both sides with K.O. Spray enough into both sides of the cushion foam to penetrate all the way to the middle. Put both the cushions and the covers out in the sun to dry for a day...fresh air and sunlight do as much to destroy mold as any product. Do the same with life jackets, sails and any other soft goods you can put outside to dry. Take bedding, towels etc home...wash 'em and if possible hang 'em in the sun to dry instead of using the dryer. You can't put your headliner out in the sun, but you can spray it with K.O.--be sure to use enough to get all the way into it to the backing--and leave all hatches open...turn on fans. Use Tilex or any other strong mildew remove on all the hard surfaces, including the inside of lockers and drawers...pull out drawers and get behind 'em, also the outsides of the drawers themselves. Get every inch of every hard surface on your boat. And finally CLEAN your bilges with a lot of detergent and water, followed by thoroughly flushing ALL the dirty water out. Mop up every bit of water remaining, then leave all hatches open--even turn fans on for at least 24 hours to completely dry out your bilge. Killing the mold and mildew is only half the job...completely drying out the boat and keeping the interior dray is the other half. so it's important that you provide ongoing ventilation and dehumidification while the boat is closed up. Always leave all interior hatches and lockers ajar and drawers pulled out a few inches when you leave the boat, so that ventilation can circulation into every nook and cranny. You'll prob'ly be fighting a bit of a mildew odor for a while, 'cuz it's hard to get every nook and cranny the first time...but afterward you should be able to identify the sources of the odor that remains and gradually get rid of all of 'em.
