Can't seem to get rid of odors in my Cat 27....I have been told the only cure is to replace all hoses from the head and hoding tank because they over time break down and leach odors.... Any advice here ? Big job ? Cost implications / Thanks !

Replace your System

I have a 1988 Catalina 27, I dont know the year of yours but I replaced my holding tank, all hoses and fittings this year. Purchase the tank from Catalina! (1-818-884-7700)its only about $70.00 and it will fit exactly. The hoses are from West Marine or Boat US and I used about 14 feet at $12.00 a foot. Clean the V berth area around the tank once the old one is removed, replace all fittings! I found the PVC fittings at a pool supply place paid about $20.00 or so. This and along with proper maintenance of the system will cure the oder ploblem. Also, go to the "Expert Forums, The head Mistress" on this web page for more information. Good Luck

Tank replacement ?

Isn't replaqcing the holding tank overkill ? I was told tanks cant leak odors ... unless its cracked of course. Same deal the fittings... hoses are the real problem.. Are you hearing different ? Gary

Yes the Tank and the Fittings

Yes, the tank and fittings. The tank will never be able to be cleaned or disinfected enough to remove the odor. I tried and for $70.00 it’s worth knowing I have a fresh tank to make a fresh start. The old tank will continue to permeate the odor. The fitting should be replaced as well. The odor permeates from all of the components of the system; again start with a completely fresh system. Also, and the most important reason of all, there was no way my wife or I for that matter, would sleep in the cabin with any, and I mean any hint of that smell. It’s worth the $200.00 or so and it's an easy job!

Replace Hoses

I had the same problem on a 1988 Catalina 34. I replaced all the head hoses with the newer hoses. I bought the white, expensive stuff. Head odors supposedly won't leach through in later years. This cured my problem with head odors in the boat, haven't even considered changing the holding tank. Try the easier stuff first, I always say. Oh yeah, and to help prevent problems, use Odorlos. If you use it and follow their directions, you will be amazed at how well the stuff works. It will take about three or four pump outs after you start using it before you really notice the difference, but I guarantee you that you will notice that difference!
