Odd NOAA Chart update

I use NOAA chart 11369 47th Ed. Sep/09 for Lake Pontchartrain that I downloaded from NOAA's site last year.

In checking with the NOAA chart viewer today they have the same chart edition, number, date, everything identical, except the addition of two hazards that were added near the Hwy 11 bridge. I'm sure the hazards are the result of Katrina, sunken barges or parts of the Hwy 11 bridge most likely.

So they updated the chart but the chart edition and date did not change, nor did the the bar code 'serial number' on the chart's lower right change, it's all identical. sure, its not a completely new survey, but shouldn't the chart edition number and date have changed?

If the new hazards they added were less obvious and I was only looking at the chart date I would have missed the update.

That reminds me, For those sailing Lake P. I have the exact coordinates of a pipe that sticks up about 6 inches above the water - I'll post it tonight if I remember

It's near 30' 06.808"N 90' 02.113"W, about a half mile from a notation about PA submerged pipes on the chart.

Especially with electronic charts, they'll add information from the LNM since it does not require a complete reprinting of the chart and it can be done cheap on a regular basis. Basically it's just an update version of the 47th edition from Sept '09.

Two things there should be a note on the chart indicating compliance with LNM as of DDMMYYYY. And #2 someone should stick a long piece of bamboo with the leaves still attached into that pipe.

Hey, that's not a bad idea. It's got a cap on it, I'd say it was 8 inches in diameter or so, but I imagine something could be attached to it to make it more visible (it's black).

The lake had many gas wells in the past, when they left (for environmental reasons) they just cut off the well heads and left numerous pipes sticking up out of the bottom.

So when I see Submerged Pipes on the chart I used to think "don't drag a fishing net over the bottom there", but after encountering that fella I now think twice before I sail anywhere near a pipe or obstruction noted on the chart.

The problem with this one is the distance from the maps PA note, a half mile is a long way, but I would guess there are pipes near the notation as well.

What also brought this home was a Mayday call I overheard 2 weeks ago from a motor boat that lost a passenger and was sinking after they struck a submerged object near a rig in the gulf. I'm thinking "but for the grace of God there go I"...

At sailboat speeds I would probably just bounce off a pipe like I saw but I'd rather not find out.

Oh, and the chart says "Corrected through LNM Sep. 15/09", just like the old one.

Trying not to be one of those guys...so as promised the exact coordinates of that hazardous pipe is:

30' 06.808"N 90' 02.113W

This is a real hazard in Lake P. so if you sail that area mark this. Again it's an 8" or so well pipe that (at what I believe was near low tide) was 6 inches above the water.

I edited my estimate above (which was pretty close) to match.
