I would like to get a pulse of owners with the Universal 5444 engine, on engine starting. It seems that my rebuild 1984 5444 takes a long time to start, does anyone else have this issue? If I pre-glow 40 secs, then it will start, but that kills my batteries. So in order for me to start it, I pre glow 15 secs, turn it over (even though I know it will not start), then pre glow for 15, repeated 3x and then it will start. Just want to see if this is an inherent issue, or if maybe one of my glow plugs is bad.... Thanks

I am experience the same issue with my Oday 39 but only after the engine has sat for a week or so. I would say it usually takes about 20 - 30 secs of glow plug to get it started after a week of not running. If the engine is warm as would expect it fires right up

Yes, it not just me...

Yes, after sitting for a week or several days of non use. So is your starting method same as mine? Do not pre-glow for more than 20 secs, and just repeat the process till she starts up? Do you end up killing your battery if you pre-glow for the 30+ sec to start her up the first time? Have you had your glow plugs checked to confirm that they are all working? I plan on doing this when I have some time and a helper to help with this... Thanks

wiring

You might want to check this link regarding glow plug wiring and check the link in the reply by Stu Jackson regarding installing a solenoid. My guess is that you don't need a solenoid as suggested there but really only need to replace the wire in the glow plug circuit using a heavier wire. That way you will have more juice to the plugs and thus a hotter combustion chamber. Good luck

Battery condition?

At the beginning of this season while it was still cold here in the NE I charged up the engine battery and used the glow plug circuit as per norm and it killed my battery,I had to combined the batterys (house and engine) to start the engine and after repeated charging of the engine battery I had the same problems so I replaced the battery and all is aok I've had the boat 3 years and this battery came with the boat so I really did not know the age of it.
