Oday28 Universal M12 Exhaust manifold question

Have an Oday 28 1985 Anniversary Edition I recently purchased. I am rebuilding the Universal M12 motor. The marine exhaust connects to the boat exhaust with a series of heavy galvanized pipe fittings 3-90 degrees and several nipples. Is this how it was done originally from the factory? It seems and looks unprofessional and very heavy for the four small bolts that hold the exhaust manifold to the engine. Would love to get a picture of how it was done from the factory or a picture of what you are using. I can fabricate something but would like for it to look original.

That's the way Universal diesels are done. The system is built in place using standard pipe fittings. There is no pre made exhaust elbow. Cheap and easily repaired, but cobbled up looking. Yours may not actually be original, but the original was similar.

OK. Thanks a lot. I will resist the urge to reengineer it. It just is really heavy for the bolts but it has obviously stood the test of time. Leave well enough alone!
